There was a little patch of lawn, a hedge and some garden chairs behind our room – somewhere to relax in the sun and rig up a washing line to dry our cycling clothes. We locked our bikes to the window box, but there’s a small garage too. The rooms have a kettle for tea and coffee (still not that common for low and mid-range hotels in France). Photo: ©Logis Hôtels

Lovely 4* between Beaune and Dijon
The hotel Le Richebourg – just over midway between Dijon and Beaune – is used to welcoming cyclists as it's often used by bike tour companies in the Burgundy region. It offers lots of facilities, including a spa and restaurant, and the elegant rooms and suites have air-conditioning (some with views of the surrounding vineyards and village, so it's not at all a bad spot to enjoy one of the best wine-producing areas in the world). Bike rental can be arranged via the hotel. Free wifi. French, English and German spoken by the friendly staff.
