Logis Auberge Sundgovienne is a family run hotel set among lots of green space near a forest near the Altkirch town centre. This is an ideal stop if you are cycling the Western Front Way bike route, a World War One memorial bike ride. The hotel is in fact less than 2km from the Monument Kilianstollen, an important local landmark on the old German front line. It's also possible to see old trenches, slowly being reclaimed by nature, nearby. "Family run" is sometimes overused but not in this case – Logis Auberge Sundgovienne has been run by the same family for three generations. It has an in-house restaurant serving traditional and modern cuisine, plus a shady terrace and lovely gardens. Singles, doubles, triples and family rooms. Dedicated bike storage. Altkirch is 20km south-west of Mulhouse and so also handy for the Alsace vineyard routes.

Good value, bike-friendly hotel in central Mulhouse
The Brit Hotel Mulhouse Centre is a friendly and welcoming hotel that's well set up for cyclists and experienced at welcoming us. The hotel is accueil velo-rated and there is a dedicated bike storage shed (pictured). 24-hour welcome. Repair kits available. Breakfast can be arranged for between 4am and 6am if you need an early start. Likewise, if you need a rest day, you can have it later - from 10am to midday by arrangement. It's also just a short ride to the railway station. Private, and enclosed car park if you're arriving by car. And because I get asked often, I'm not sure where the name derives but the Brit Hotel group has nothing to do with Britain or the British as far as I know - it's simply a group of independent hotels that group together to boost their marketing power.

It is set among its own gardens just outside the ramparts of Obernai, a medieval town that makes a lovely stopover. Character-filled oasis in the heart of Strasbourg
A little oasis in central Strasbourg, Hotel du Dragon's name is in stark contrast to its peaceful character. The 3-star hotel is situated in a traditional 17th-century building a short distance from the cathedral, and has a tranquil courtyard ideal for relaxing in after a day on the bike or sightseeing. Friendly and responsive staff – when I contacted a few Strasbourg hotels to ask if they could take delivery of a bike shipment for an American cyclist, this hotel was very happy to help. They in fact have a dedicated bike shed for 6 bikes and also provide bike repair kits and tools. Rooms are modern and stylish, and include family rooms for up to 4 people, making the hotel ideal for sharers. Free wifi. 24-hour room service, plus help with tours and add-ons.
