This is a wonderfully restored 500-year-old mas, set right below Lussan, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France (Most Beautiful Villages in France). It's set in 8 acres of tranquil gardens. "We have three self-catering 5-star gites here," writes the owner, Kate. "We are in the Gard between Uzes and the Cevennes/Ardeche, so we are fantastically located for gentle family cycling as well as for more demanding rides. At the end of the day, we make a good retreat as we have a bit of luxury, with the pool and gardens. There are also restaurants within walking distance." Cycle right from the door on one of the many local routes – one of Kate's favourites is to Les Concluses de Lussan (canyons) – or take your bike up to the Cevennes to really stretch your legs. Close to Pont du Gard, Nimes and Avignon, as well as to the lovely town of Uzes. The gites sleep 2-6, making this a great option for self-catering solo riders and couples, as well as groups. Each gite has wifi (and pre-loaded iPads), plus there's a small shop selling essentials. Baguettes and croissants baked daily to order.

The Bonelli's self-catering gite lies hidden in the limestone countryside and vineyards of the Minervois on the edge of a national park. This is perfect cycling country with many routes (and, often, the Tour de France) passing near the property (the Canal du Midi is just 18km to the south as well). Stuart, the owner, is keen for more cyclists to use it as a based for a weekend stopover or as part of a longer cycling holiday. It's also the perfect choice for walking, horse riding, sightseeing, birdwatching (spring and autumn) or simply relaxing by the pool. (See here for some ideas on what to do in the area). The recently restored stone gite has two bedrooms and offers flexible luxury accommodation for up to 5 people. The house has air-conditioning, a well-equipped semi-subterranean kitchen, sitting room with TV & DVD, music centre, and satellite. There's also a lovely bathroom that's perfect for post-ride muscles! There's also a heated pool with a BBQ and outdoor seating area. Cycle hire can be arranged locally, plus there's a secure garage and tools for storage and repairs.

Mike's keen to see more cyclists use his 1981 vintage 'glamping' caravan situated in his orchard near Chalabre and Mirepoix – a rural area tucked in the foothills of the Pyrenees but still only 50km south of the Canal du Midi. The caravan has an eco system, solar electricity and a composting loo. When we spoke to Mike, he was also putting in a new sunroof to cover both the caravan and the decking. It makes an interesting self-catered option for riders exploring this 'hidden' part of the south of France, and the views of the lower Pyrenees are a bonus. There is a garage available in the nearby main house for bike storage. (The van can be booked via Mike's main accommodation website).

This wonderful village house in the centre of beautiful Conques-sur-Orbiel sleeps seven people in three double rooms. It's ideal for groups or families looking for a base within easy reach of the Canal du Midi and the old city of Carcassonne (just 8km to the south). Patti, the owner, is a leisure cyclist and she's keen to see more riders use the house. There's a ground floor storage room for bikes, plus a ladies' Pashley and a men's mountain bike available for guest use. There are bike routes for all abilities from the door – gentle backroads down to the Canal du Midi and the vineyard routes of the Aude, but also the Black Mountains or the Pic de Nore (1211m) for something more challenging. The village itself dates back to early medieval times and still has a ruined chateau at its heart. More modern treats include a village brocante, restaurants, bolaungerie and a greengorcer selling local cheeses and produce. All told, The Little French Maison is an base from which to experience local French culture while still being within easy reach of all the key tourist hotspots.

Amid all her training for the UCI Masters' World Championships in Perth last year, Gillian somehow found the time to set up this super cyclists' base in the Aude countryside. Gillian's cycling lodge is a homely stone farmhouse offering ensuite B&B accommodation for cyclists of all abilities – tourers, road riders ... you're all welcome. Gillian offers a service here tailored for cyclists to help you make the most of cycling in this quiet corner of the Langeudoc/Occitanie countryside. If there's a road within a 100km radius of here, Gillian's probably ridden it. She also prepares delicious breakfasts to power you through the day and – as a passionate vegetarian cook – can offer delicious evening meals for when you come in off the bike. She can also suggest some lovely restaurants nearby so you can sample the regional cuisine. Onsite pool and plenty of space to relax. There are also mountain views, a garden with a terrace and pool. It's ideal for those long summer days. Inside the house has been renovated but retains its rustic charm. It suits groups from 4-12 people (there are five large bedrooms, three bathrooms and a seperate WC). There's also a mezzanine with an extra two beds. This is a super, super place to stay. Hilde and Heather stayed here when they rode the Canal du Midi. This hotel is in the heart of Narbonne, which is on the Canal de la Robine, an offshoot of the Midi. And the girls could not rave more about it. The staff were lovely, there was a great cyclists' breakfast, and the hotel itself is well-located and within walking distance of Narbonne's key attractions. The hotel has retained the charm of a grand family home, and despite its modern touches, its pictures, lamps, and furniture are all in keeping with the original 19th century character of the building. Luggage store. Free wifi. French, English and Spanish spoken.
