Camping Omaha Beach is in a spectacular location, perched on the clifftop and offering direct beach access and stunning sunrises. Tent pitches, plus sites for caravans and campervans. There are also mobile homes of varying quality and sizes. Mini-supermarket and bar/restaurant open during peak season. Kids' playground with trampolines and bouncy castles. Pool. The site itself and its facilities are showing their age a bit and this place isn't as slilck as many newer campsites, but for locatioin it's hard to beat if you want to be near Omaha Beach.

The Battle of Carentan is one of the key World War II battles recreated for TV in Band of Brothers. Domfront - Numéro CINQ B&B (Veloscenie + Velo Francette)

Super bike-friendly townhouse B&B on two major French bike routes

It's always a good sign when a B&B owner emails to provide some small snippet of information about a local bike route. That's how I found out that Jacie's Numéro CINQ B&B at the crossroads of two major national bike routes: Veloscenie Paris to Mont St Michel and the splendid Velo Francette from Caen to La Rochelle. Numéro CINQ is wonderfully set up for cyclists: dusters and rags are available to clean down baggage and bikes, hot or cold drinks are offered on arrival, and there's an SOS collection service offered within 20km for punctured or broken down bikers. The B&B is just a two-minute walk from the Medieval Domfront town centre and its bars and restaurants. English and French spoken. For anyone wanting a break from long-distance riding, there's lots of beautiful local cycling on offer if you fancy a fixed base for a few days (think small local roads, farmland, and apple and pear orchards). For those with a car, it's a 40-minute drive from Mayenne or half an hour into the Suisse-Normandie for hillier rides.

Family run hotel at the crossroads of the Veloscenic and La Velo Francette

Situated in the historic old town of Domfront, the Hotel de France is a perfect base for both the Veloscenic and La Velo Francette. Don't let its bright red signage and strip motel appearance put you off. Hotel de France's rather banal facade hides a multitude of delights. Not least, the welcoming family-run vibe with everyone – from the grandchild to the dog – featured in the picture. There's safe and secure bike storage in a curtained-off section of the dining hall. There's a laundry service for bike clothes, free wifi and the owners are only too ready to help prepare food for your onward journey.

Ducey – Hotel Le Moulin de Ducey

Pretty riverside hotel on the Veloscenic Paris to Mont St-Michel bike route

An unexpected gem of a hotel in Ducey. The historic stone mill's been cleverly and very tastefully converted into a modern boutique hotel, prettily located on the banks of the river Selune (famed for its salmon fishing). Bikes are locked safely behind a locked gate, though the area's not undercover. There's a laundry service for wet or smelly bike kit, plus wifi. An outstanding breakfast is available to fuel your day – varied and generous and just what every cyclist needs (there are even extras like bacon and French pancakes).

Good value to be had in Gisors

We are not sure that the name of Hotel Moderne is completelty appropriate considering the decor, however, this hotel is ideal for anyone cycling the Avenue Verte London to Paris bike route. It is a registered accueil velo hotel through the local tourist board (so secure bike storage is available, along with emergency repair kit and other bikey support). The great price also makes it a really good option. The hotel, which is located right in the middle of town, has a bar, free wifi and a buffet breakfast.

Giverny - B&B Aux Vieilles Pierres

Cycle-friendly B&B for Monet fans on the London-Paris bike route

B&B Aux Vieilles Pierres was recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here. They report that it's a typical French B&B with friendly owners and the added bonuses of a heated indoor swimming pool and sauna. It's handy for the Avenue Verte London to Paris bike route and also close to the Seine Valley bike route that links Paris to the ferry port in Le Havre. It's also an ideal stop for Monet's garden at Giverny, 10km away – close enough to ensure you can be there bright and early before the tour buses arrive but far enough away to avoid the worst of the crowds if you're staying on afterwards. This is a good last stop before/first stop from the outskirts of Paris.

Giverny - Maison où Claude Monet vécut à Vétheuil

B&B steeped in art history deep in Monet country on the Seine

As the French name suggests, this is the house where Claude Monet lived while painting more than 150 works of art between 1878 to 1881. It's on the River Seine about 15km shy of Giverny on the Paris side. It's open to visitors as a museum but it also has a small B&B that's ideal for cyclists. There's a double room as well as a quadruple for families or a group of friends. For bikes there is dedicated bike storage. Cyclists who have stayed here report that the owner, Claire, is friendly and accommodating, and that the rooms are clean and comfortable. Located on the Avenue Verte London to Paris bike route and also the Seine Valley bike route that links Paris to the ferry port in Le Havre, this is an ideal place to soak up the magic of Monet on your French cycling holiday.

Small and friendly B&B recommended to us by one of our contributors, Hilde, who used the B&B on a cycling trip from Caen to Honfleur. Simple place to rest your head and have a good meal

The Hotel de France in Isigny-sur-Mer was recommended to us by Bob Zeller, one of our contributors. He stayed here while touring in Normandy. It's a 2-star hotel and part of France’s Logis chain, which is usually a safe choice for value for money. The rooms are basic, almost North American motel-style, but comfortable and clean. There is a lock up garage for bikes. As is often the case with Logis hotels, it also has an excellent restaurant.

L'Epinay Le Comte - The Bakehouse (near Domfront)

Cosy converted bakehouse for 2 in Normandy's cycling heartland

The perfect base for couples and friends looking to explore northern France. The Bakehouse sits of the western edge of the Parc naturel régional Normandie-Maine, and near the junction of the Orne and Manche departments of Normandy and the Mayenne in Pays de la Loire. This is prime cycling country, with 5 local signposted bike routes between 14km-30km (maps available), including 2 routes passing the Bakehouse's doors. Just 11km away is Domfront, where the Paris to Mont St-Michel route crosses over with La Velo Francette. The Tour de Manche, with direct links to the D-Day Beaches, ferry ports and Brittany, is also within reach, as is the picturesque towpath of the river Mayenne. Local villages here start their fete day celebrations with a cycling race, so the flash of Lycra is a regular sight from the Bakehouse. Le Soloro was recommended to us by Hilde, who stayed there in 2014 on her Caen-Honfleur bike ride. The hotel is a few kilometres south of Brionne, in the village of La Riviere Thibouville. The hotel, Hilde said, had seen better days: "The gardens were overgrown and from the outside it looked rundown," she says, "but la patronne was very friendly, our room was lovely and we ate at the hotel that evening. La Velo Francette - L'Ancien Pressoir

Cozy B&B in the heart of wonderful Suisse-Normandie

Just a 10km (mostly) river ride from the La Velo Francette route at Pont-d'Ouilly, this B&B is a lovely stop in one of the most beautiful (and lesser discovered) corners of Normandy. Suisse-Normandie is a beautiful region of rolling hills and river routes for road riders (with easy access to the ferry port at Caen for cross-Channel riders or to Paris in nearby Domfront, where La Veloscenie passes), but there are also some 800km of mountain bike tracks here, making it one of France's MTB hotspots for fun off-road trails without the sharp peaks of the Pyrenees or Alps. The owner speaks French, English, German and Dutch and we are told she offers a cozy B&B welcome in her 200-year-old village house. Free wifi.

La Vélo Francette – La Maison 1833

Stylish and friendly family run B&B south of Domfront

We stayed at Maison 1833 when we cycled La Vélo Francette. At the time it had just opened and its potential was clear. It's run by Katherine and Christophe, a well-travelled French couple who have opted for a quieter life after years of international travel and living. The B&B is a short detour from the actual Francette route but it's worth the ride if you're after a spot of homely luxury on your cycling holiday. There are only two rooms, making this is a 'proper' B&B experience (you'll leave half-believing you've known Katherine and Christophe for much longer than the length of your stay). Katherine is a wonderful cook – say 'yes' to her offer of table d'hôtes for a lavish feast to fuel you for a week (though save room for the exceptional breakfast she'll serve up the next day). Free wifi. Katherine and Christophe will also go out of their way to help you plan the next stage of your journey if you need some local advice or support. French and English spoken.

La Maison de la Fontaine is at Le Beny Bocage, near the EuroVelo 4 Tour de Manche bike route. The B&B is just 3km from the excellent Souleuvre Viaduct at Carville, an outdoor adventure centre with an AJ Hackett bungy jumping site, as well as an zipwire course and family luge. EuroVelo 4 is signposted straight through the viaduc, which is well worth a stop for lunch (restaurant and picnic area onsite). Le Beny Bocage also links to the D-Day Beaches, Bayeux and Mont St Michel on the EV4. La Maison de la Fontaine has 5 rooms, including a family room. There is a terrace and guests can make use of free wifi. Picnics are also available for your panniers (usually featuring a mixed salad, a sandwich, seasonal fruit, a drink and a cereal bar). Hotel Le Beauvoir is perhaps better known (and regarded) locally for its restaurant than its accommodation, however it does offer basic rooms for an affordable price (often in combination with meal deals). When I visited to eat, the lovely lady managing the restaurant told me that the hotel has a lockable garage for bikes and that it often welcomes cyclists who are passing through en route to Mont St Michel. Montebourg - Chambres d'hôtes les Clématites en Cotentin

Cheerful B&B close to restaurants and en route to the D-Day beaches

I stayed here while cycling in Normandy and found it both affordable and cheerful. The owner Patricia is a delight, cheerful and very welcoming (anyone who asks if you'd like a hot chocolate for breakfast before she even shows you to your room wins points with me). The rooms are big, bright and colourful with eclectic wallpaper and comfortable beds. The bathrooms are less impressive and a little bit dated, but there are hot towel racks and radiators for drying cycling clothes and, as a one-night stop close to town, this place is great. One room also has a fridge and microwave; it's also on the road – it's not noisy by city standards but the other two rooms are at the back and quieter, one with garden views. You do need to be aware that you need to arrive after 5pm unless you've let Patricia know in advance (you can do this when you book online); if you arrive early, you can get a key from a neighbour. This is a good stop on the Tour de Manche bike route that doubles as the EuroVelo 4 through Normandy and Brittany. Inhouse restaurant serving regional cuisine – the chef prides himself on using local produce and creating the flavours of Normandy (vegeterian options available too). Mortain-Bocage - Maison Voie Verte (Velo Francette, Véloscénie and Tour de Manche)

Cosy B&B between Domfront and Mont Saint Michel

Just a few metres from the door of Maison Voie Verte lies the Véloscénie cycle route which links the Tour de Manche route (around 3km away) with Mont St Michel 53km away; which makes this cosy B&B the perfect stopping-off point if you're passing through on your bike. The link to La Vélo Francette (La Rochelle to Caen) is also nearby so you are really spoilt for choice. They have secure storage for bicycles and luggage, with drying facilities for wet clothes. House bicycles are available for guests to use as well. Maison Voie Verte is a small B&B with 2 double ensuite rooms and a tranquil seating area in the garden. Help yourself to hot drinks in the communal breakfast area, or use the microwave and fridge. There is also a town just 3km away with restaurants (the owners will give you a lift if you arrive with tired legs or don't want to cycle at night). La Villa Des Tilleuls is a perfect base for cycling Normandy's cider route. This is a circular 40km trail through orchards and beautiful wooden houses that have been turning apples into crafted cider or Calvados for hundreds of years. This is also a good location for a rest stop within easy reach of the ferry port at Caen. The villa comes recommended for cyclists by the local tourist board and is in a tranquil spot with five really nice rooms. Homemade food also available in the evening and for breakfast, which can be eaten outdoors.
