L'Horizon B&B in Niort has been recommended to us by cyclists who rode La Velo Francette on a tandem. They said the B&B had no trouble safely storing the bike, and that they were able to wash their gear and hang it on the line in the garden. The B&B is located a short stroll from the town centre and within easy reach of local restaurants and bars. It has two rooms – a double bed room and a second room with two singles. The owner, Agnes, is a registered local guide, so you can pick her brains for tourist information. She can also prepare evening meals for you if you are arriving late or too tired to venture out. Lovely host, stunning rooms – a perfect retreat in Niort

We stayed in some wonderful hotels and B&Bs on our La Velo Francette trip but this one in Niort was one of my absolute favourites – for so many reasons. Firstly, there was Christine, who greeted us with a huge smile and farewelled us a day later with a stash of bananas and fresh water bottles. She has five lavishly decorated bedrooms (with lovely walk-in showers – perfect after a day on the road), as well as two studio apartments in her gorgeous restored townhouse. Christine's put her heart and soul into the place – and you can tell; her fine and elegant touches are everywhere from the rich wall colours and art to the beautifully laid out (and wholesome) breakfasts. There is a large garden to relax in, complete with pool and safe bike parking. French and English spoken. Free wifi. Just perfect.

Nontron - Camping Château Le Verdoyer

Camping in the Perigord Vert between Angoulême and Limoges

Set in the national park of the Perigord-Limousin, this campsite sits in the grounds of a chateau and lake. Some key renovations have taken place in 2015 to improve the facilities, including changes to pitches and to the terrace area used for eating and entertainment. A new chef has also been bought on board in the restaurant to give you a taste of local cuisine within the stone walls of the chateau (if you're late arriving you can take advantage of a special menu to fill you up on a fast but simple dinner). Water is a big part of experience here, and there are two lakes – one for fishing and one for swimming – plus three pools, complete with water slide. Cycling in the Dordogne area is always a pleasure due to the quiet roads and stunning scenery, but this site is also close to the voie verte (an old converted railway line) between Saint Pardoux la Riviere and Thiviers – a great 17km shaded trail that will take you off through the countryside.

La Villa Des Tilleuls is a perfect base for cycling Normandy's cider route. This is a circular 40km trail through orchards and beautiful wooden houses that have been turning apples into crafted cider or Calvados for hundreds of years. This is also a good location for a rest stop within easy reach of the ferry port at Caen. The villa comes recommended for cyclists by the local tourist board and is in a tranquil spot with five really nice rooms. Homemade food also available in the evening and for breakfast, which can be eaten outdoors.

A La Cour d'Alsace hotel and spa is a lovely 4-star treat for anyone cycling the Alsace wine route. It's used by cycle tour companies, so it is well used to hosting cyclists. It is set among its own gardens just outside the ramparts of Obernai, a medieval town that makes a lovely stopover. The hotel is in an old manor house which was once the home of one of Alsace's noble families. Today, its ancient features marry well with modern comforts like a pool, spa and jacuzzi. The restaurant is home to modern French cuisine plus there's a vaulted ceiling wine cellar packed with scrumptious French treats, many of the bottles local to the Alsace region and from vineyards that you will pass on your bike route.

B&B Amphitryon was recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here. It was described as a friendly and welcoming local French experience. It's an ideal base for cycling in the western Pyrenees. The B&B is in an old 18th-century presbytery in Oloron Sainte Marie, 34km SW of Pau. It's on the Saint Jacques de Compostela route and also handy for Tour de France cols, including Col de la Pierre St Martin to the south. There are five nicely decorated rooms. There is a storage area for bikes (room for MTB and road bikes). Check-in is usually between 6pm and 8pm so call ahead if you are early or late.

Friendly eco-hotel just across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower

I stayed here the last time I was in Paris with my bike. Hotel Gavarni is a friendly, character-filled hotel (the lift stops on half-floors, so I was on floor three-and-a-half(!) It's located a handy ride from Gare Saint-Lazare, where many trains come into from the north of France (I was coming from Normandy). Better still, it’s just across the river from the Eiffel Tower, a short walk from the Trocadéro gardens and an easy walk to the Champs-Élysées; a few blocks away is the vast expanse of the Bois de Boulogne. I was astounded to find this affordable, quality three-star hotel so close to key attractions. Family rooms available; the posher rooms have views of the top of the Eiffel Tower, though my budget room was perfectly functionable and quiet (no city noise coming through the window). Free wifi. The hotel also has a green policy: everything is recycled, it uses renewable energy and eco-friendly detergents. My bike was safely tucked away to the side of the reception area. We've stayed here – read our review.

I've been running Freewheeling France for more than 10 years and, in that time, there has been one email that intermittently pops into my inbox: "I'm arriving into/passing through/leaving from Paris. Where can I safely store my bike/bike box?" I have a very good answer: Hotel de La Porte Dorée will store bikes and boxes free of charge for its guests. It is in the 12th arrondissement, near the glorious Bois de Vincennes park and forest, on the Metro line to the Eiffel Tower, and close to Gare de Paris Bercy and Paris Gare de Lyon (for trains from Burgundy/Dijon and Lyon Part Dieu); by bike, you can get here from Gare du Nord or Montparnasse in under half an hour; the EuroVelo 3 route passes nearby. The hotel is owned by Laurent and Christina, a Franco-US team who cycle to work (and whose kids also ride). It's a certified eco-friendly hotel that's endeavouring to go 100% plastic-free. They compost, use vegetable-based paint and all their breakfast products are organic. "We are making a huge effort to reduce our use of resources as much as possible," says Christina. They also have their own small fleet of hotel bikes (and repair tools etc for you to use). They can even provide snacks for cyclists upon arrival! There's a large basement storage room for bikes and bike boxes (though they can also be taken to your room if you prefer). There's also a courtyard for daytime storage. If you're starting your trip in Paris before heading off elsewhere, they're happy to store your bike box free of charge until you get back. Free wifi. This is without a doubt top-of-the-list if you need somewhere to stay with your bike in Paris.

Large French doors open onto a lush interior courtyard. Cyclists who stayed at Maison Saint Jacques have recommended it to us. It's run by an English couple called Dorit and Trevor, and they have lived in the area for quite some time and know it well. We're told they are both friendly and knowledgable and that the place itself of full of character and charm. (And that breakfast includes fresh, homemade treats). It's a 14th century townhouse in the old timber style, and has its own courtyard and small garden. It's set in the centre of Parthenay, so close to local restaurants and shops for restocking panniers. There is a B&B room plus a self-catering apartment. It also carries accueil velo status so has all the bikey bases covered. French and English spoken.

If you're riding into Perigueux by bike, this hotel is spot on. Hotel Ibis Périgueux Centre is located across the river from the wonderful Voie Verte des Berges de l'Isle, which delivers you in to the city centre (we rode in from Thiviers) and also links with the V90 l'Isle veloroute that heads west. You are right in the middle of town and just 1km from the train station (for links to Bordeaux and Paris). The hotel has free wifi, a bar and restaurant and a continental breakfast (as with most French hotels, breakfast is offered for a surcharge). The hotel also has a locked cellar that was perfect for our bikes (access is only via reception).

Friendly hotel-restaurant 11km west of Périgueux

Small and friendly family-run hotel-restaurant (there are only 14 rooms). Buffet breakfast, plus full and half-board options also possible. Free wifi. Pool and terrace. The owner, Philippe, says there is an area in the hotel set aside for bike storage. They can also advise on local bike rental.

Centrally located Perpgnan hotel with good bike storage

A site user recommended the Ibis Perpignan Centre Hotel to us, saying it was well-located and close to all the main sights. He was particularly impressed with the friendly welcome he got when he arrived by bike. When we contacted them, the hotel confirmed that there is a baggage room, plus they can make available another lockable room for bikes if one is available You also have the option of storing your bike in your own room. The hotel has multilingual staff. There's a restaurant, and bar/lounge area, plus free wifi.
