Seriously! Who wouldn't want to ride their bike down this driveway? Le Manoir du Butel is a farmhouse B&B run by cyclists near Saint-Armand, east of the Tour du Manche route at Le Mesnil-Raoult (17km south-east of St-Lo). The French owners tell us that they regularly welcome touring cyclists and that they are indeed cyclists themselves (MTB riders). They will be able to help with local routes etc. The B&B is around 4km from the nearest large town with a restaurant, but the owners say they are happy to take you there if your legs aren't up to the task after a day on the bike. What more could you want?!

Clean and stylish 2-star hotel in the heart of UNESCO-listed Saint-Émilion. The hotel itself is part of the ancient fabric of the town, being set in an old Templar house. It's within walking distance of local restaurants and wine shops (which can arrange shipment home, just in case you were wondering...). From the door you can ride almost straight out into the vines. Bike-friendly hotel in beautiful, historic Saint-Émilion

This is a lovely hotel right near the historic UNESCO-listed centre of Saint-Émilion. (Some of the hotel's own buildings are actually listed as historically significant). The accommodation is flexible, with single rooms through to family rooms. A group of cyclists who stayed here recommended the hotel to us. The full buffet breakfast (including scrambled eggs – something of a treat in rural France) filled them up. The hotel's beautiful gardens (with pool) overlook the vines and are secure, providing safe bike parking (the hotel regularly welcomes cyclists). French and English spoken. Free wifi. Late deals possible (see our link) but prices do vary across the seasons, especially in summer when Saint-Émilion is hugely popular with visitors.

Recommended to us by readers, Le Château Du Val sits by the River Seine to the west of Paris. It's handy for both the Epte Valley route to Le Havre and the London to Paris Avenue Verte, making it a useful stopover at the start of your journey or as your last night before arriving in Paris. The small chateau has clean rooms with breakfast being served in a Louis XIV-styled state room. And an interesting local fact for you: if you were wondering where the Saint-Germain of famous football club Paris-Saint Germain comes from, then it is in fact from this small town's football club, which merged with Paris in 1970. Anyway back to cycling, this is a great base and the owners will happily store bikes safely away overnight in the locked garage.

Vent d'Eden Park Hotel in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez on the Atlantic Coast in the Vendee department of western France is an Accueil Velo-rated hotel that actively markets itself to attract more cyclists. There are around 350km of cycle paths and routes in this area of France. This is an ideal base for exploring a wonderful part of the Atlantic Coast – try cycling Boucle No.22, which takes in the salt marshes, or head off on the regional Vendee touring route. There is secure bike parking in a dedicated secure room, as well as basic tools and repair kits, cleaning brushes and a water jet washer. Washing machines are also provided for cyclists needing to refresh the kit in their panniers. There are electric charging areas for e-bikes. Local advice for routes, weather and bike shops is available at reception. If you are arriving by car, then you are also able to leave your car for longer periods of time if you are staying at the start and end of your trip. Quiet accessible coastal camping near Les Sables d'Olonne

Located in a green environment, yet just minutes from the beaches and fishing harbours of the Vendee coast, this site provides the perfect oppurtunity to have a relaxed and varied break. The pitches are mixed sizes but generally shady and the owners strive to maintain a peaceful atmosphere while still providing entertainment for all age groups during summer (including a meal and dance nights on Wednesdays and bingo on Mondays). If you prefer to use your legs 11 for cycling, then you're spoilt for choice with the La Vélodyssée – the 1200km Atlantic Coast bike route – running nearby. Use Camping La Mouette Cendrée as a stopover if you're riding the whole route, or stay a while longer and use it as a base for some shorter day rides.

Sainte-Foy-la-Grande – Château des Vigiers

Quality 4-star hotel tucked away in the countryside

A touch of luxury hidden away in the Dordogne countryside, around 24km from Bergerac. A golf country club with an onsite restaurant, it aso has bike hire for guests. Accommodation is in the main chateau or there's (more affordable) space in the adjoining 'relais' section, including family rooms. Riding around here is just lovely, with some nice vineyard rides on super quiet roads. There are some hilly routes, but it's also possible to get in some flat kilometres east towards Monbazillac (though beware the climb up into the village). This is an ideal stop on a Bordeaux to Dordogne ride. Chambres d’hotes d’Eglise was recommended to us by Bob Zeller, one of our contributors, who stayed here while touring in Normandy. There is a garage for the bikes and a nice breakfast on offer. Chambres d’hotes d’Eglise is called a B&B but it's more like a hotel. It doesn’t usually open for arriving guests until the afternoon, but if you get there earlier, there is a small restaurant/coffee shop in the same street where you can rest and wait. The coffee was excellent, as were the pastries. All in all, Chambres d’hotes d’Eglise is an ideal base for exploring this section of the D-Day beaches area. Don't miss the Airborne Museum, which we visited on this trip.

Impressive building home to a hotel-restaurant in the heart of Sarlat

Sarlat is a large medieval town in the heart of the Dordogne Valley. It's a handy stop if you are cycling in the Dordogne and an ideal base if you are wanting to explore the area's prehistoric treasures. Hotel La Couleuvrine is right in the middle of town. We're told by cyclists who stayed there that it is very bike-friendly and has a lock-up bike storage room. It also has a very good restaurant.

Sault - Hotel d'Albion

Townhouse hotel ideally placed for an assault on Ventoux

If you're travelling with a bike, the Hotel d'Albion is a good choice. It's got good bike storage and a hire shop nearby. The hotel itself has free wifi and a bar with views across the town and lavender fields beyond. A cyclist who stayed here told us the hotel staff were friendly and helped organise taxis and other bits and bobs. No air-conditioning, though, so ask for a room on the lower floors, which are apparently cooler.
