Camping L'Île d'Offard is perfectly placed for a stop in Saumur on the EuroVelo 6 Loire Valley route as well as on the Velo Francette route as it snakes its way from La Rochelle to Caen. Tent pitches, plus wooden huts, fixed base canvas tents, lodges and mobile homes to rent. There is even a 'luxury' option. The campsite is a short cycle (or 15-minute walk across the bridge) to the centre of Saumur. Heated swimming pool and spa. Good for families, with a kids’ club in school holidays. Set over 11 acres of parkland and bordered by the Loire, Camping L'Île d'Offard is a great overnight stay as well as an ideal base for a longer fixed base cycling holiday. Accueil Velo-rated and also on the accredited Loire à Velo network, this campsite is well used to receiving cyclists. Part of the Flower Campings network of independently run sites.

Saumur – Le Londres Hôtel & Appartements

Bright and friendly bike-friendly hotel in Loire Valley hotspot

We stayed here on our La Velo Francette bike ride and it's a great base either for a night or for an extended stay (it has hotel rooms as well as self-catering apartments). The staff were super friendly and didn't blink an eye when two smelly, sweaty cyclists arrived later than expected. It's located in the heart of Saumur, as short walk/ride from the Loire River. Breakfast was one of the best we had on the ride with a huge buffet with breads, cereals, eggs, fruits and yoghurts from which to choose. Bike storage was the most secure we had all trip with bikes locked in a private garage at the rear of the hotel, with the garage courtyard also acccessed by code. The hotel also carries the French Accueil Velo mark. Free wifi (plus computers for guest use are also available). It's family friendly with toys and books etc available for kids. Beds were comfy, showers were hot, the hotel itself was bright and clean – an ideal place to stay.

Le Refuge de Guyenne is a two-bedroom self-catering house that's available to cyclists on a nightly basis. It was recommended to us by cyclists who stayed there. Sauveterre is a natural stopping point on the Canal de Garonne Bordeaux to Toulouse bike route, being as it is at the end of the excellent Roger Lapebie bike route. Le Refuge de Guyenne welcomes couples as well as small groups or families. It has a room with a double bed, plus another with bunk beds; there is also a sofa bed. Free wifi.

An impressive old stone fort hotel on Meuse Valley bike route

Hotel Le Chateau Fort is an impressive Accueil Velo-rated hotel right on the Meuse Valley bike route. It's close to the centre of Sedan, an old fortified city, making it a handy and interesting stop. The rooms are well appointed with coffee machines and en-suite facilities, and the hotel has a really nice bar and restaurant and enclosed courtyard. This hotel is used often by riders on the Meuse route, so the staff here are used to welcoming cyclists. The building is a medieval fortress so something a little bit special and out of the ordinary at relatively affordable prices.

Les 2 Etangs in Seignosse offers an upmarket 'camping' experience in fixed base bungalow tents, self-catered cabins and apartments. With a lake 500m away and the beach a 5km ride through forest trails, it has a relaxed holiday vibe. The site itself is a 4-star campground so it has creature comforts including a heated outdoor pool and spa, plus kids' entertainment. It's ideal for a fixed base self-catered cycling holiday if you are looking for a base on the Atlantic Coast Eurovelo 1 bike route. It is Accueil Velo-rated by the tourist board.

A warm welcome awaits at this family-run hotel owned by Christiane and Pascal Funaro. The building itself dates back to Napoleon's time (it belonged to one of his colonels), and today it's the perfect mix of old and new. It's set among the vineyards on the Alsace wine route, making it an ideal base from which to cycle. As a result, it's popular among cyclists, and cycle tour companies often use it as a base. The interior is magestic and every room is individually furnished. It's in the centre of Sélestat, so local restaurants and bars are just a short walk away, or you could eat in the hotel's restaurant.

Tucked away on a lakeshore in the heart of a forest, the Huttopia Lac de Sillé campsite on the outskirts of the Sarthe region is a good base if you're exploring the area's network of bike routes (see here). The site is a quiet and shaded site in an unspoilt area. There is a lake nearby for watersports, plus bike routes around the lake. The site also has some nice mod-cons, including a swimming pool, a cafe and a bar area.

Fancy staying on a working vineyard? Look no further! Domaine de Massereau is located between Montpellier and Nimes, and also within reach of the Camargue. Its owners have created something really special based around their wine-producing château. The property is part of the Eurocamp network that offers self-catering cabins on campsites in France. The property is bike-friendly – cycle through the trees to your cabin hidden among oak trees. Facilities on site include swimming pools (with waterslides), a gourmet-standard restaurant, indoor spa, Jacuzzi and sauna. Adults spending more than three nights in May, June and September also get a free 45-minute spa session or a free pass to the local adventure parc, Roc de Massereau. You can also try canoeing, tennis or other outdoor activities. This is a good option for families or groups wanting an affordable fixed base for a few days (or more) in the south of France.

Auberge du Puits was recommended to us by cyclists who stayed there. Located in the centre of the Souillac old town and near the river routes of the Dordogne, it has its own restaurant (ideal for late arrivals who just want to shower, eat and relax!) and a dedicated bicycle storage area. There is a private garden and terrace, while some rooms have a private balcony. It's also close to Souillac railway station, which is on the line to Paris, Cahors and Toulouse. Free wifi. With the Tarbes railway station only 1.3km away, this four-star hotel provides a good first stop for those arriving in the area by train or plane. It offers a great base for visitors wanting to explore the Pyrenees or take in a stage or two of the Tour de France. Decoration is modern throughout and the rooms are well appointed, with king-sized beds and air-conditioning. There is a bar and restaurant, plus gym and relaxation area (massages can be arranged). Relais de Thezillieu is a family run hotel-restaurant in the small village of Thézillieu (only around 300 people live here). The hotel is near the Grande traverée du Jura à vélo route at the southern end just shy of Culoz. This area is a hub for cycling (road riding + MTB), as well as walking, fishing and, in winter, skiing (it's at an altitude of almost 900m). The restaurant here serves lovely local mountain cuisine (think home-made foie gras and brioche, tête de veau, plus regional meats and other produce. Bike room, plus locked garage if you're arriving by car. Hotel de la Gare in Thouars offers clean and well-equipped accommodation near the train station. It has an accuiel velo rating and is used to receiving cyclists. This place is ideal if you are cycling the Velo Francette route which runs from Caen to La Rochelle. In fact we stayed here when we cycled the Francette and found it a welcome stop after a rainy day of mud and punctures. We arrived late and very wet to be met by the owner, Monsieur Galas, who took a soggy bag of cycling clothes, washed them and returned them smelling like roses the next morning. Bike parking was enclosed within the hotel garage (pictured here).

Super bike-friendly hotel in central Toulouse. Yannick from the hotel's management team contacted me to say they were very keen to host more English-speaking cyclists. The hotel is located on beautiful Capital Square, one of the city's showcase restaurant squares. Key city sights like the Saint Sernin Basilica, the Augustins Museum and the Convent of the Jacobins are all easy to reach from the door. The hotel is just a few blocks from the Canal de Garonne and the Canal du Midi, making it a good base for a ride in either direction. Gourmet restaurant with traditional French dishes plus a summer restaurant with salad and grill and an evening piano bar. The hotel has access to a locked bike parking box for 20 bikes in the secure carpark opposite the hotel. There's a bike maintenance and repair kit available from reception and a laundry service if you need to freshen up your kit. Free wifi. French and English spoken.

Originally founded in 1905 as a wine bar by the grandfather of the current owners, the Hôtel Le Père Léon is a stylish 3-star city hotel in the city centre (the Esquirol Metro station is out the front). A brasserie still operates inside the hotel where the wine bar was first established, and this is complemented by a fully refurbished hotel. (The brasseries's wine racks – chock-full of hundreds of bottles – were protected throughout the refurbishment to preserve their coat of dust). This is a good base for exploring Toulouse – it's a quick ride to the river Garonne and to the point at which the Canal de Garonne becomes the Canal du Midi, plus it's handy for the city's museums and the basilica. The Privilège Hôtel Mermoz in the so-called pink city of Toulouse was recommended to us by tandem riders who stayed there, so there is plenty of space for cyclists and their equipment. It's about half a kilometre from the Matabiau train station, the city's main terminal, but still manages to incorporate an outdoor pool. Rooms are soundproofed and come with a coffee machine, a handy extra. There is also a decent – if slighly expensive – breakfast served every day, or you can just pop out for a croissant or to the supermarket.

Toulouse - Royal Wilson Hotel

Clean and welcoming Toulouse hotel that's easy on the budget

The Royal Wilson hotel is located in the centre of Toulouse, ideally located for the junction of the Garonne de Garonne and the Canal du Midi bike routes (see here). The hotel has an Accueil Vélo rating, so secure bicycle storage facilities, bike washing and repair kits are on hand. There is a free left-luggage facility and a breakfast of breads and pastries from the Victor Hugo market, fresh seasonal fruits, cereals, cream cheeses, juices and hot drinks to set up for the day.

Located near the Rhone river north of Valence, the Hotel Les Amandiers offers friendly and affordable accommodation to cyclists (it's an accredited accueil velo hotel). Free wifi. Dedicated bicycle parking (and they'll even find somewhere to store your bike when the bike garage is full). Disabled access rooms. There is also a hotel car parking area (the hotel let us leave or car there while we went off cycling for a few days). Some rooms have balconies with mountain views. Generous buffet breakfasts with savoury meats, cheeses and eggs plus a fine array of croissants, fruits and breads (they get lots of cyclists here and they feed them well!) French and English spoken.
