Set in the national park of the Perigord-Limousin, this campsite sits in the grounds of a chateau and lake. Some key renovations have taken place in 2015 to improve the facilities, including changes to pitches and to the terrace area used for eating and entertainment. A new chef has also been bought on board in the restaurant to give you a taste of local cuisine within the stone walls of the chateau (if you're late arriving you can take advantage of a special menu to fill you up on a fast but simple dinner). Water is a big part of experience here, and there are two lakes – one for fishing and one for swimming – plus three pools, complete with water slide. Cycling in the Dordogne area is always a pleasure due to the quiet roads and stunning scenery, but this site is also close to the voie verte (an old converted railway line) between Saint Pardoux la Riviere and Thiviers – a great 17km shaded trail that will take you off through the countryside.

This is a good option if you're wanting to escape the main tourist trail that runs along the Loire river to the north. Camping Les Alicourts is situated on a lake with a wealth of water sports on offer, including cable water-ski. There's a choice of four pools, including a heated covered option, plus lots of things to keep children entertained with dedicated clubs for each age group. For big kids, there's cocktails on the bar terrace and a choice of dining options. The chateaux are still accessible from here, as is the famous wine town of Sancerre to the south. The tourist hotspots of Orleans and Blois are 60-70km from the site, making this an ideal stopover en route or after the busy Loire route.

Ideal for either a stopover or a slightly longer stay to rest and explore, Camping Lac de Saint-Cyr is an easy pedal to the excellent Futuroscope, as well as the cobbled streets of Poitiers. This is an open site set by a beautiful clear lake with a nice beach for relaxing by the water, with pedaloes, canoes and catamarans for hire. You can bike around the lake on the dedicated paths that run alongside the lake, and relax in the heated pool (complete with waterfall and massage jets) afterwards. We just love the sound of this place. This green and lush campsite is situated on the border of the Ecrins, one of only 10 national parks in France. The site is at an altitude of 1450 metres, meaning that you can literally ride stunning mountain routes from the door. This is mountain camping as it’s meant to be. From your pitch you’ll be able to see the rocks of the Ecrins, as well as beautiful valleys and the glacier of Pelvoux. A three-star campsite, Camping Croque Loisirs is clean, with hot showers and a good friendly service (speaking French, English, Dutch and German). Most of the 50 pitches have access to electricity and there are several water taps. Every morning you can also buy fresh bread, a great way to start your day. The campsite is part of a sports initiative run by an enthusiastic group of Dutch people wo are passionate about sharing the Southern Alps. They can help you plan your rides (GPS maps and stacks of local knowledge), or take on their own bucketlist cols challenge that includes Galibier, Izoard and a bunch of other Tour de France climbs.

Located in a green environment, yet just minutes from the beaches and fishing harbours of the Vendee coast, this site provides the perfect oppurtunity to have a relaxed and varied break. The pitches are mixed sizes but generally shady and the owners strive to maintain a peaceful atmosphere while still providing entertainment for all age groups during summer (including a meal and dance nights on Wednesdays and bingo on Mondays). If you prefer to use your legs 11 for cycling, then you're spoilt for choice with the La Vélodyssée – the 1200km Atlantic Coast bike route – running nearby. Camping de Rhuy is a 3-star campsite at Theix, to Vannes in Morbihan. It's perfect for chilling out after a day on the bike. This is a great area to explore by bike. Other activities include kayaking, sailing and fishing but also museums, an aquarium and a host of charming Breton villages to visit.
