8 Rue de la 5ème République,
14690
Pont d'Ouilly
Calvados, Normandy
Price from: €61
Open: All year
We stayed at the bike-friendly Le Relais du Commerce on the final stretch of our La Velo Francette ride. In the heart of Suisse Normande, this is arguably one of the prettiest stretches of the ride. The hotel itself is pretty basic, but it's good value and clean. There's a dedicated bike shed at the rear of the hotel, and a restaurant onsite serving local fare; the food was OK but we'd probably try a local eatery next time. Rooms at the front of the hotel open up on to the balcony which overlooks the town (the balcony is ideal for airing wet and smelly cycling kit too). Free wifi. Double and triple rooms, all with en suites.

In the heart of Rouen's historic town centre
Rouen is one of France's most famous cities, having been the place where Joan of Arc was famously burned to death in 1431 (she was tied to a pillar at the Vieux-Marché). Hôtel Littéraire Gustave Flaubert was recently renovated and boasts all the mod-cons. It's well-located for Notre Dame Cathedral, the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Seine river banks. An underground garage is available for the storage of bikes (the hotel is registered as Accueil Velo with the local tourist board and also offers e-bike hire). For leisure or day riders, the city also has an excellent bike scheme called Cy'clic. Unlimited free wifi and the staff speak French and English.

Secluded country B&B run by cyclists
Seriously! Who wouldn't want to ride their bike down this driveway? Le Manoir du Butel is a farmhouse B&B run by cyclists near Saint-Armand, east of the Tour du Manche route at Le Mesnil-Raoult (17km south-east of St-Lo). The French owners tell us that they regularly welcome touring cyclists and that they are indeed cyclists themselves (MTB riders). They will be able to help with local routes etc. The B&B is around 4km from the nearest large town with a restaurant, but the owners say they are happy to take you there if your legs aren't up to the task after a day on the bike. What more could you want?!

Ideal base the excellent Airborne Museum on the D-Day peninsula
15 rue du Général Koënig
50480
Sainte-Mère-Église
Manche, Normandy
Price from: €70
Open: All year
Chambres d’hotes d’Eglise was recommended to us by Bob Zeller, one of our contributors, who stayed here while touring in Normandy. There is a garage for the bikes and a nice breakfast on offer. Chambres d’hotes d’Eglise is called a B&B but it's more like a hotel. It doesn’t usually open for arriving guests until the afternoon, but if you get there earlier, there is a small restaurant/coffee shop in the same street where you can rest and wait. The coffee was excellent, as were the pastries. All in all, Chambres d’hotes d’Eglise is an ideal base for exploring this section of the D-Day beaches area. Don't miss the Airborne Museum, which we visited on this trip.
