I get a lot of enquiries from people who want to cycle independently but don't want to carry their luggage with them. Often they're cycling as part of an extended non-cycling trip, so they have suitcases; sometimes they're cycling from A to B (and not back again), so it's not possible to leave luggage at a hotel to collect later; sometimes they just don't want to be bothered with panniers.
Firstly, depending on the distances involved and the number of bags and transfers, it can be sometimes almost as affordable and much less hassle to just take a cheap self-guided package that includes baggage transfers, accommodation, bike hire and route maps. This self-guided option still gives you the independence to take detours or ride at your own pace – it just removes all the logistics, which some people enjoy dealing with and some people hate.

Baggage transfer on the Canal du Burgundy
A few companies offer baggage transfers in the Burgundy region, but mostly along the canals. If you want to venture too far off the beaten track, then you'll need to look at using local taxi firms and arranging each baggage transfer yourself. This is often possible in conjunction with hotels, which can recommend local services. A warning that this can get expensive so really only works out financially if there is a group of you.
For 'standard' transfers along the canal network, email me the following details at lyn@freewheelingfrance.com and I will try and connect you with a reliable local service:
- number of bags (and size – e.g. do you have massive suitcases or a rucksack?)
- date and destination for each transfer. e.g. X to X on DATE.
You will likely need to use hotels rather than airbnbs as someone will need to be at the reception to receive the bags if they arrive before you do each day.
