I gets a lot of enquiries from people who want to cycle independently but don't want to carry their luggage with them. Often they're cycling as part of an extended non-cycling trip, so they have suitcases; sometimes they're cycling from A to B (and not back again), so it's not possible to leave luggage at a hotel to collect later; sometimes they just don't want to be bothered with panniers.

I'm pleased to report that a luggage transfer servce exists for all these cyclists in Burgundy.

I'm still yet to find a dedicated servce for the Canal de Garonne or Nantes-Brest Canal, though some bike hire firms do offer luggage transfer as an add-on on the Canal du Midi and along the Loire, so it's always worth checking. All tour companies in France offer baggage transfer for guided and self-guided rides.

Baggage transfer on the Canal du Burgundy - how it works

BagTransfert is an established service that's been running for over 10 years. It operates predominently along the Canal de Bourgogne or Burgundy Canal, but also in other areas of Burgundy on request, including along the Canal du Nivernais, the wine routes, Grande Traversée du Morvan and sections of the St Jacques de Compostelle route.

The service operates from June 1 through to August 31 (email for possibilities outside these dates). At the time of writing, it was €12 per bag, with a minumum 2 bags per delivery and a 20% discount for groups.

For cycling the Burgundy Canal, pickup and delivery can be arranged on the website (you'll need to email for other routes). For the canal, you choose the date of your first stage:

Then a pickup point by town (you'll be given a list of partner local hotels, campsites and tourist board offices where bags can be left). You simply choose your preferred option (there's no commitment to stay at these hotels – they are just the designated pickup points).

Then go on to add further stages to your ride ('+Ajouter une étape') before finalising the reservation ('Poursuivre ma commande').
