Comfortable accommodation among the high-rollers on the Riviera
OK, so I realise Monaco this isn't *technically* part of France but I'm including bike-friendly accommodation here because so many cyclists pass through during their South of France travels. The Novotel is in the heart of Monaco, a short ride from the train station, Place du Casino and Grimaldi Forum. Cafe and restaurant onsite, plus bar. Guests have access to 2 computers on site, plus free wifi throughout the hotel. Rooms sleeping up to 4 people. Pool, terrace, garden. Other facilities include a hammam, library and children's playground. French, English, Italian and Spanish spoken. Management advises that bikes can be safely locked in the luggage store.

This hotel in the Grand Corniche of Nice was recommended to us by a fellow cyclist. The rooms are beautifully turned out and there are specatular views from rooms and panoramic restaurant. It's a two-star hotel with 11 rooms and – unusually in this part of the Cote d'Azur – the spectacular views from here are actually affordable. The owners, Valerie and Gino, tell us there is a garage for storing more than four bikes. If you're in a group of fewer than 4, the bikes can be stored safely on the private terraces.

We just love the sound of this place. This green and lush campsite is situated on the border of the Ecrins, one of only 10 national parks in France. The site is at an altitude of 1450 metres, meaning that you can literally ride stunning mountain routes from the door. This is mountain camping as it’s meant to be. From your pitch you’ll be able to see the rocks of the Ecrins, as well as beautiful valleys and the glacier of Pelvoux. A three-star campsite, Camping Croque Loisirs is clean, with hot showers and a good friendly service (speaking French, English, Dutch and German). Most of the 50 pitches have access to electricity and there are several water taps. Every morning you can also buy fresh bread, a great way to start your day. The campsite is part of a sports initiative run by an enthusiastic group of Dutch people wo are passionate about sharing the Southern Alps. They can help you plan your rides (GPS maps and stacks of local knowledge), or take on their own bucketlist cols challenge that includes Galibier, Izoard and a bunch of other Tour de France climbs.
