Only a couple of minutes from the Meuse a velo, this hotel and restaurant makes for a convenient stop-over for Verdun sightseeing.

4 things we liked about the hotel

1. Location
Close to the EuroVelo 19 Meuse cycle route and the voie verte, the hotel is conveniently located for sightseeing around the Verdun battlefields. Unlike many of the ‘destroyed villages’ in the forests around the Verdun memorial and ossuary, the village of Vacherauville was rebuilt after being totally destroyed during the First World War. During the war, the French introduced the Croix de Guerre, a new honour that could be awarded to towns, military units and even animals, and Vacherauville is one of many French communities so honoured.

2. Facilities
The hotel has an automated check-in outside core hours, and inside it’s clean and bright. There was a little patch of lawn, a hedge and some garden chairs behind our room – somewhere to relax in the sun and rig up a washing line to dry our cycling clothes. We locked our bikes to the window box, but there’s a small garage too. The rooms have a kettle for tea and coffee (still not that common for low and mid-range hotels in France).

3. Restaurant
The hotel’s restaurant is a minute away, on the main road between Verdun and Dun-sur-Meuse, with good-value food and wine, and friendly service.

4. Accueil velo-rated
The hotel complies to the accueil velo standards via the tourist board, so shoudl be able to help with luggage transfers and other cycling related enquiries.
