Plans for a bike path through the Loire's grottoes

Published by Lyn on 20 November 2015

As if there weren't already enough reasons to cycle in the Loire, there are now plans for a 12km underground bike path.

Final studies are well underway that could lead to the development of 12km underground bike route in the heart of the Loire Valley.

If the idea – which has the backing of local tourism authorities – goes ahead, it will cyclists through the amazing prehistoric cave dwellings and stunning grottoes of the region between Montsoreau and Saumur.

Already a great destination in its own right, the idea is to provide a unique attraction and develop the area to become even more welcoming for cyclists.

The route will be attached to the existing Loire à Vélo route (EuroVelo 6) and will have viewing areas at key points along the way.

The proposal is in its early stages, and is not expected to be ready for cyclists before 2017. However the towns between Montsoreau and Saumur can be currently visited above ground by following the véloroute between Montsoreau and Liré (126km).

See here for a lovely day ride around Angers, plus our Saumur to Angers stretch of the La Velo Francette. There's also THIS rather lovely annual event for your calendar.
