Reader Q&A: How do I meet other cyclists in St Malo?

Published by Lyn on 18 August 2013

I get dozens of email queries a week about cycling in France. When time permits, I post some of them on the blog in case anyone else can improve on my answers or share their experiences. (Note I do not publish full names or contact details).

Sally emailed from St Malo to ask about hooking up with other cyclists in Brittany.

Question:

Hello Lyn,

I recently moved to St Malo from the US. I've been a lifetime cyclist for 45 years, commuting, cycle touring and even some racing many years ago. What do you recommend as the best way to find cyclotourists here with whom to travel, short of signing up for tours? My French is improving but it would also be great to hook up with English speaking cyclists. So far most of the folks I've met here are guys traveling in racing type groups. Would love any advice you could share.

Thanks,
Sally

Answer:

Hi Sally

Welcome to France!

Firstly, though you're not looking for a tour, I'd suggest picking the brains of the guys at Brittany Borders Bicycling as they know that region very well and will likely have suggestions on local groups etc.
Their details are in the Brittany section of our cycling tours directory - you can tell them I suggested you get in touch.

I'd also put a note on the forum of the AngloInfo site up there.

I'd also register your interest on Cycle Chat - there's bound to be others keen to meet up, or even regular weekend visitors from the UK to Brittany who would fancy some company.

Likewise the CTC website - it's UK-based but my Brittany articles are among the most popular on my site and many of these riders are regulars to northern France.

And by all means post a note on the Freewheeling France Facebook page!

Good luck - it would be great to hear how you get on. Do let me know if you fancy writing any local route reports for us once you find your feet - contributions are always welcome!

Bonne route!
Lyn.

Update from Sally:

Hi Lyn,

I was lucky enough to tie in with some great groups of local cyclists and Marché nordiques enthusiasts right after I wrote to you. Still always looking for new riding companions but the community here is wonderful.

Next Monday I leave on a 4-day section of the Val de Loire with my 11-year-old petit fils who is my best riding companion. The segment we are riding this year will be to start in Angers and ride to Tours or Orleans, depending upon stops along the way.
