family bike day

If you're anywhere near the western fringes of the Dordogne on August 30-31, 2013, then you might want to check out the annual family bike weekend in Pays de Montaigne. There is lots planned (the programme is here in French), including a kids' bike day in Bonneville on the Friday (there's an animated open-air movie screening from 9pm, too).

The highlight of the weekend, though, is likely to be an organised bike ride in the tyre tracks of Lawrence of Arabia. The 25km family ride from Castillon-la-Bataille to Lac du Gurson is along a section of the Roue de Lawrence d'Arabie. The Saturday, August 31 ride leaves Castillon at 9.30am (meet from 9am), with stops at Montcaret, Saint Michel de Montaigne and Montpeyroux. There is more information here (including a Google map).

Accommodation for the weekend

You can find a few cycle-friendly accommodation options near the ride route by searching the Aquitaine listings in our Where to stay section. In particular, see La Grosse Forge in Bonneville and La Maison de Manon at Villefrance de Lonchat. Alternatively, you coud always hire your own campervan – complete with bikes – for the weekend.
