Explore the backroads linking Sauveterre to the culturally rich bastide town of Monsegur south-east of Bordeaux.
Distance: 55km
Difficulty: Moderate – 778m of climbing
Sauveterre is best known to cyclists as being a stopping-off point on the Canal de Garonne Bordeaux-Toulouse bike route, but it's well worth setting aside an extra day or two to explore this area if you can. Away from the Garonne route, it's a largely under-cycled area and the only cyclists you will see will be locals.
This ride takes you via the Abbey of Sainte Ferme to the town of Monségur in the valley of Le Dropt. You will notice the change in the landscape about 10km outside Sauveterre-de-Guyenne in the direction of the Lot-et-Garonne department. The number of vineyards gradually reduces to give way to forests and fertile valleys, large farms, apple, plum and nut orchards with some more wine around Monségur.
