The official Canal des 2 Mers bike route – the canal between two seas – starts at Royan on the Atlantic Coast, where it meets the La Velodyssee EuroVelo 1 bike path. From here it's a backroads ride to Bordeaux. There is also an 'unofficial' option to continue south from Royan and cross from Lacanau to Bordeaux.
From Bordeaux, the wonderful Roger Lapebie bike path goes to Sauveterre. From there, there's a short backroads ride to just south of Le Reole, where the Canal de Garonne towpath starts near Fontet. It joins the Canal du Midi at Toulouse for the onwards ride to Sete.
The canals route meets the Lot Valley bike route near Damazan and via an earlier link road, and also crosses with the EuroVelo 3 route. The wonderful regional Tour de Gironde also crosses with the canals route.
