The Var in Provence is famous for its seaside resorts and the glitz and glamour of the French Riviera, but venture a little inland behind the Cote d’Azur and you’ll discover wonderful scenery, rich countryside, quaint medieval villages and, of course, great food and wine. La Bastide de Correns on the outskirts of the ‘1st Organic Village in France’ has the perfect set up for cyclists, with accommodation for between 2 to 10 people in a self-catering house or private suites. There are great local cycling routes, including Cyclo Tourist 10 - Route de la Bauxite and Cyclo tourist 11 - Historic Villages of the Var, as well as an inland stage of the new EuroVelo 8 - The Mediterranean Route. This is an area of quiet back roads, gentle hills and valleys, vineyards, forests, gorges, lakes and rivers. This is a comfortable 2-story house which is ideal for exploring the Var bike routes, with the house itself located on local bike circuit #11 and just 2km from the quaint  village of Cotignac (with restaurants and shops. The owners, Sandra and Jack, are a multilingual German/English/French-speaking couple who are keen for more cyclists to use the house (the website link is only in German but they say to please email or phone – they definitely speak English and want to welcome you!) There are three air-conditioned bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (plus a toilet on the ground floor), satellite TV, and fully furnished kitchen with dishwasher, microwave and laundry room. There's a swimming pool, dining patio with an Argentine-style grill and gazebo. Parking, fully fenced for security. If you need extra space (or if there are only two of you), there's also a fully equipped studio apartment on the property.

There can be fewer nicer places to stay than a self-catering gite at the foot of the Ventoux that comes with its own restaurant for when you're too tired to cook. But that's what David and Fiejette have at La Fleur Bleue Restaurant & Gîtes in Crestet. There are two self-contained gites, each with two bedrooms and sleeping up to 5. From your door you are a measly 4.6km from the start of the Malaucène Ventoux climb, or a 17km warm up ride to Bédoin. When you get back, there's a hot tub in the cherry tree orchard (complete with views of Ventoux to remind you where you've been). Cook in your own kitchen or enjoy lunch or dinner in the restaurant courtyard (yes, with more Ventoux views).
