L'Horizon B&B in Niort has been recommended to us by cyclists who rode La Velo Francette on a tandem. They said the B&B had no trouble safely storing the bike, and that they were able to wash their gear and hang it on the line in the garden. The B&B is located a short stroll from the town centre and within easy reach of local restaurants and bars. It has two rooms – a double bed room and a second room with two singles. The owner, Agnes, is a registered local guide, so you can pick her brains for tourist information. She can also prepare evening meals for you if you are arriving late or too tired to venture out. Free wifi. French and English spoken.

Price from: €65

We stayed in some wonderful hotels and B&Bs on our La Velo Francette trip but this one in Niort was one of my absolute favourites – for so many reasons. Firstly, there was Christine, who greeted us with a huge smile and farewelled us a day later with a stash of bananas and fresh water bottles. She has five lavishly decorated bedrooms (with lovely walk-in showers – perfect after a day on the road), as well as two studio apartments in her gorgeous restored townhouse. Christine's put her heart and soul into the place – and you can tell; her fine and elegant touches are everywhere from the rich wall colours and art to the beautifully laid out (and wholesome) breakfasts. There is a large garden to relax in, complete with pool and safe bike parking. French and English spoken. Free wifi. Just perfect.

This is a special place to stay. This old convent building dates to the 11th century and has been lovingly restored. It's now a hotel and function centre but that's only half the story, with the abbey also still holding musical festivals and recitals in tune with its wonderful past. It's also accueil velo-accredited. Arriving by bike hire somehow seems fitting. We have included this hotel on our DIY cycling itinerary for La Flow Velo. ** Read our review **.

Hotel de la Gare in Thouars offers clean and well-equipped accommodation near the train station. It has an accuiel velo rating and is used to receiving cyclists. This place is ideal if you are cycling the Velo Francette route which runs from Caen to La Rochelle. In fact we stayed here when we cycled the Francette and found it a welcome stop after a rainy day of mud and punctures. We arrived late and very wet to be met by the owner, Monsieur Galas, who took a soggy bag of cycling clothes, washed them and returned them smelling like roses the next morning. Bike parking was enclosed within the hotel garage (pictured here).
