Mid-range hotel on the outskirts of Abbeville, 20km south-east of the Bay of Somme and en route to Amiens. Abbeville is a frequent stop on the London to Paris route. Free wifi. Onsite restaurant with terrace. Management advises that bikes can be locked securely inside a room in the hotel.

Comfortable and friendly 3-star hotel in the heart of the Somme
This hotel comes recommended to us by a cyclist who used it while cycling the battlefields of the Somme. Set in the heart of the Picardy region, Hôtel Royal Picardie is an elegant and peaceful 3-star old-style French hotel. It has 24 rooms – all either double or twins and all with en suites. There is an onsite restaurant with traditional French cuisine. Excellent range of options for breakfast (including pancakes, accordng to our cyclist!) plus packed lunches available on request. There's also a hotel bar. The staff were happy to find a secure room in the hotel to lock his bike overnight. Free wifi. French and English spoken.

Good bike-friendly base from which to explore the Battlefields of the Somme. Within reach of Boisselle, Thiepval and Beaumont Hamel memorials. Stylish three-star hotel in a lovely old mansion building in the centre of Amiens. Around 100m from the train station and close to all the city's main attractions. Locally managed. 24-hour reception. Free wifi throughout the hotel. French and English TV. Catering trays and snacks available on request. The management advises us that bikes can be safely stored inside the hotel.

4-star hotel opposite Amiens' famous UNESCO-listed cathedral
Located opposite France's largest cathedral in Amiens, the Mercure provides a 4-star base to rest your legs. Rooms are large, the restaurant is excellent, and there is also a bar and lounge in which to relax. Free wifi. Management can provide a room in which to securely store bikes overnight. Amiens is the gateway to the Battlefields of the Somme, and a good stop if you're looking to experience a small French city after a few days' riding in the countryside.

Hotel du Cygne in Beauvais is at the crossroads of a number of good cycling routes. Firstly, it's on the official London to Paris Avenue Verte bike route. It's also well located if you're cycling south from Calais to Paris, as Richard Peace did here. It's a reasonably priced, accueil velo hotel with spacious bike storage (though it's on the first floor, the owner will help you if required). There's a full buffet breakfast available each morning and there are also plenty of shops and restaurants nearby if you prefer to pop out. Free wifi.

The manager of La Marina complex is keen to welcome more cyclists to this modern and fresh apartment-style hotel situated between the marina, fishing port and town centre in the popular Boulogne-sur-Mer. La Marina is Accueil Velo-rated and offers a variety of apartments sleeping between 2 and 6 people, each with a fully-equipped kitchen and an outdoor area. You can cater in or eat out, or take breakfast in the hotel. Bikes can be stored in the underground car park without charge or in your apartment if you prefer. This is a great option for anyone riding the Euro Velo 4 bike route, or anyone arriving in France with their bikes on the back of a car and needing a good first (or last) stop in France. This hotel is a good base for watching the Paris-Roubaix or exploring the nearby ancient Forest of Compiègne which covers a total of 14,417 hectares and is crossed by hundreds of bike trails. Is stands alongside the River Oise in the historic cultural town of Compiègne. Hotel management tells us they have access to an underground carpark close that has places reserved for hotel guests' bicycles. Free wifi. French and English spoken. This is also ideal for cycling from Lille to Paris.

Set in a wonderful old stately home, it makes for a memorable stay. It's close to several local tourist sites, including the Chimay brewery and the fortified castle of Guise. Located in the heart of the seaside resort of Bray-Dunes, the Etoile de Mer offers Accueil Velo-rated hotel apartment accommodation for up to 6 people. The management is keen for cyclists to stop over while riding Vélomaritime bike route, the French section of the Euro Velo 4. Alternatively, make it a weekend cross-border break to explore the area surrounding France's border with Belgium. This is an ideal base for cycling groups and families, as well as solo riders and couples. Apartments are self-catering, but hotel breakfasts are also available if you prefer someone else to collect the baguettes and do the cooking for you. Each apartment has wonderful sea views and the beach and dunes are within walking distance. Bikes can be kept safely in the apartments overnight.
