Les Artigaux is in the Val d'Azun, with stunning views of nearby Arrens village and the mountains. There is a converted barn plus 4 fully furnished apartments (with a hot tub and sauna for tired muscles) ready and waiting for cyclists. The property is located just off the road to the Col du Soulor, which leads on to the Col d'Aubisque. Other climbs within striking distance are the Hautacam, Luz-Ardiden and the Tourmalet. There are also a number of challenging lesser known climbs on quiet back roads (Simon has ridden most of them and can offer lots of local advice). Val d'Azun also has about 400km of marked mountain bike routes from steep climbs and descents, to trails through the woods and wide open rides around the cross-country ski pistes. Free wifi. Peyloubère is a lovely 35-acre estate 6km south of Auch (and 80km west of Toulouse) with flexible accommodation for groups as well as solo cyclists. This is beautiful, relatively undiscovered cycling country with a network of small roads and well-maintained cycling tracks (see here for more about cycling in the Gers). Auch is on the Arles to St Jacques de Compostelle route, while the Pyrenees are also within reach. Theresa, who is super keen to welcome more cyclists, offers B&B as well as 5 self-catering cottages for between 2 and 8 people. There is a spa with jacuzzi and sauna for tired muscles, plus a pool, gardens and meadows to relax in and explore. Bike hire is available locally and can be delivered to you, while there is a Decathlon store in Auch for repairs and spares. Family friendly. Free wifi. English and French spoken.

Auch is built around the west bank of the Gers river, and is the capital of the Gers region – France's most sparsely populated. The area makes either a wonderful base for cycling, or an interesting stop en route to the mountains of the Pyrenees or to Toulouse to the east. Hotel de France – in the middle or town – is a former coaching inn that's retained much of the elegance and charm of bygone years. It's located in the small village of Bourg d’Oueil, at the foot of Tour de France pass Port de Bales and 15km from cycling hotspot Bagneres-de-Luchon. The hotel overlooks the beautiful Oueil Valley, whose views and wildlife can be enjoyed from the gastronomic restaurant that serves traditional local cuisine. As well as delicious food, Olivier serves up everything a cyclist might need: a secure garage for storage, a wash area, a room for drying clothes, and guide notes and maps for mountain bike and road routes from the hotel door. Olivier even has a partnership with a local bike shop so guests have a go-to point for mechanical problems. There's also free wifi.
