The perfect base for couples and friends looking to explore northern France. The Bakehouse sits of the western edge of the Parc naturel régional Normandie-Maine, and near the junction of the Orne and Manche departments of Normandy and the Mayenne in Pays de la Loire. This is prime cycling country, with 5 local signposted bike routes between 14km-30km (maps available), including 2 routes passing the Bakehouse's doors. Just 11km away is Domfront, where the Paris to Mont St-Michel route crosses over with La Velo Francette. The Tour de Manche, with direct links to the D-Day Beaches, ferry ports and Brittany, is also within reach, as is the picturesque towpath of the river Mayenne. Local villages here start their fete day celebrations with a cycling race, so the flash of Lycra is a regular sight from the Bakehouse. Sue and Phil are keen leisure cyclists (they have 4 adult 'house bikes' for guests), and would love to share their corner of Normandy with you. Free wifi. Bike storage in a lockable barn. Undercover hot tub in the garden. French and English spoken.

Madeleine is keen to welcome you to her wonderful B&B only 150 METRES (!!!) from the Avenue Verte London to Paris bike route and just 25km from Dieppe – it's an ideal first/last stop on your way from/to the ferry port. Located on the 45km section of the route linking Dieppe to Forges Les Eaux, this really is a super base at the gateway to some of northern France's best biking; the Somme, Monet’s Gardens, Honfleur and Rouen can all be reached from here using a network of bike paths and backroads. Madeleine offers hearty three-course gourmet dinners (by arrangement), or there's a lovely French restaurant in the village. She has owned the B&B for more than 10 years, so she's an expert when it comes to offering local information and advice. In addition to the B&B, there's a lovingly converted self-catering barn for four people (double bed + sofa) available for week-long stays during July and August, and shorter stays the rest of the year. English and French spoken. Free wifi.

The day Sue at La Boudonniere got in touch with us, she'd just arrived home after cycling from St Malo via Pontorson (gateway to Mont St Michel) on lovely quiet country roads. She's keen for the rest of us to enjoy her quiet roads and offroad tracks too. Her two self-catering cottages offer a great base for combining a relaxing holiday with some cycling. There are dedicated cycle routes to Mont St Michel and the surrounding bay, as well as to Dinan and St Malo, and the beautiful beach and bays areas of the coast. Add to that glorious countryside and pretty medieval towns and villages, such as Combourg and its magnificent chateau, and it's an ideal cycling spot. There's also the Foret de Villecartier on the doorstep – a haven for cyclists. There are two gites – sleeping 4 and 7 – and they're available on a bike-friendly nightly basis. They're set on tranquil grounds with a swimming pool, BBQ and play areas, extensive lawned gardens, a lake and a private woodland. You can also start your stay by rummaging through Sue's welcome pack! Free wifi. French and English spoken.

Sitting in a quiet hamlet just 3km from the medieval fortress town of Domfront, the B&B at La Pichellerie has south-facing bedrooms that overlook beautiful rolling countryside. Gary and Jackie are keen to welcome more cyclists to their little oasis, and have everything riders need to experience a warm welcome. That makes the ferry ports of Caen, Le Havre, Saint Malo and Cherbourg all within reach and on bike routes from the door. Whether you're just passing through or staying on, this area is steeped in history: ride through the shady Foret d'Andaines, visit the pretty spa town of Bagnoles de l'Orne or see the 'Grande' and 'Petite' Cascades at Mortain. The old town of Fougeres with its medieval chateau is also a highlight, or continue on to Mont Saint Michel or the Normandy beaches for more history.
