The perfect base for couples and friends looking to explore northern France. The Bakehouse sits of the western edge of the Parc naturel régional Normandie-Maine, and near the junction of the Orne and Manche departments of Normandy and the Mayenne in Pays de la Loire. This is prime cycling country, with 5 local signposted bike routes between 14km-30km (maps available), including 2 routes passing the Bakehouse's doors. Just 11km away is Domfront, where the Paris to Mont St-Michel route crosses over with La Velo Francette. The Tour de Manche, with direct links to the D-Day Beaches, ferry ports and Brittany, is also within reach, as is the picturesque towpath of the river Mayenne. Local villages here start their fete day celebrations with a cycling race, so the flash of Lycra is a regular sight from the Bakehouse. Sue and Phil are keen leisure cyclists (they have 4 adult 'house bikes' for guests), and would love to share their corner of Normandy with you. Free wifi. Bike storage in a lockable barn. Undercover hot tub in the garden. French and English spoken.

This is a recently renovated Norman ‘long-house’ situated on a working dairy farm off a quiet country lane close to the village of Hambye in beautiful Normandy. The owners Kim and Andy are keen for cyclists to use it as a base for exploring the area. The property offers affordable self-contained accommodation (including a deep bath for tired limbs and two airy bedrooms). The local area is perfect for cycling (some house bikes available) with good access to Manche's 275km of ‘green’ routes (maps and information can be provided). Bayeux and its tapestry, and the ferry at Caen, are within reach. Kim and Andy can also provide simple but tasty two-course meals if you don't feel like cooking for yourself. "Guests are greeted with a freshly cooked loaf in their bread-maker and in the fridge are some bubbles and a Normandy Camembert," says Kim. "I understand the need for high carb/high protein meals for cyclists and am happy to provide for late arrivals." French and English spoken; free wifi.

La Velo Francette – the excellent Caen to La Rochelle bike route – passes just 1km from the door of La Fosse B&B on the section between Domfront and Mayenne. The Veloscenie Paris-Mont St Michel also passes just to the north. There are also a number of other voies vertes (greenway routes) in the area for cycling or walking. Louise and Tony, the owners, are up to speed on all this, and offer a friendly welcome to cyclists. They have thought of all the little things that go together to make a perfect cycling B&B. There's a secure cycle and luggage store, a drying line and a variety of tools in case you have a mechanical. They can also arrange baggage transfers and pick your luggage up from your previous hotel/B&B and ferry it on to the next one for you. (They can also pick you and your bike up if you get caught in bad weather or have a problem with your bike). A home-cooked four-course evening meal is available with a bit of notice, while a hearty continental breakfast will wait for you in the morning. La Fosse itself is a lovely granite chambre d'hotes set in 7 acres of a small holding. There are three rooms in various configurations for groups, couples and single riders. Free wifi. French and English spoken. (La Fosse is on our DIY itinerary for Francette).

Madeleine is keen to welcome you to her wonderful B&B only 150 METRES (!!!) from the Avenue Verte London to Paris bike route and just 25km from Dieppe – it's an ideal first/last stop on your way from/to the ferry port. She has owned the B&B for more than 10 years, so she's an expert when it comes to offering local information and advice. In addition to the B&B, there's a lovingly converted self-catering barn for four people (double bed + sofa) available for week-long stays during July and August, and shorter stays the rest of the year. This hotel has 12 well appointed rooms but it is the food that really stands out as an attraction. An exceptional breakfast is provided with homemade bread and jams, and we're told the coffee is good, so that should help get you going in the morning. An excellent restaurant provides local specialties and is recommended by the Normandy tourist board. For cyclists (the Vélo Francette and the Voie Verte d'Evreux Au Bec-Hellouin pass nearby), there's a locked garage for bikes. Free wifi. French and English spoken.
