Family friendly 2-bedroom self-catering gite overlooking the vineyards of the Dordogne/Gironde border region. This is an ideal base for a family cycling holiday. The location itself is best suited to riders wanting to stretch themselves on training rides, with some wonderful hilly roads leading from the door to the vineyards St Emillion or out to Rauzan, Duras, Pellegrue or Sauveterre. However there are some flatter family rides a short drive away – the wonderful the Roger Lapebie bike path starts its journey to Bordeaux from nearby Sauveterre, while there are also gentle bimbles to be had along the Dordogne river to Ste-Foy-la-Grande (for the Saturday market – voted the best market in France) or to Castillon-la-Battaile, where the specatacular Bataille de Castillon recreates the end of the Hundred Years War each summer. Swimming pool and kids' play area. Outdoor eating area and BBQ. French and English spoken. Free wifi.

Libourne - Mercure Saint-Emilion

Quality hotel at the gateway to the Pomerel/Saint-Emilion vines

3 Quai Souchet, 33500 Libourne
33500 Libourne
Gironde, Aquitaine

Price from: €89

Open: All year

Reliable 4-star hotel recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here (and good value for money given the quality). It's located right near the Dordogne River (some rooms have river views). The name is a little misleading as the town of Saint-Emilion is some 10km away, though it's a lovely ride from Libourne up through the vineyards of Pomerel and onto Saint-Emilion. (The vineyards of Fronsac are lesser explored and also make for beautiful cycling to Libourne's north-west). Libourne is a good stop if you're arriving in the area by train from Paris, if you're cycling from Bordeaux 35km away, or if you're heading from/to the Atlantic Coast route via Royan. Free wifi. Onsite bar. Management tell us they can find a room inside the hotel to safely store bikes. French, English and Spanish spoken.

A 'spoil yourself' option. Château Cordeillan-Bages is a grand 17th-century chateau in the heart of Bordeaux's Medoc wine region.
