A former Dordogne farm, Les Taloches sits on the edge of the pretty riverside village of Tourtoirac in the Périgueux-Brive-Thiviers triangle. Suzie and Gary are super keen to welcome more cyclists – there are more than 120km of on-road and MTB routes from the door (including the Lawrence of Arabia route, which goes through the village). They have a large barn with bike racks for storage, plus plenty of space for maintenance, repairs and cleaning. They also work with a local bike delivery service, which has hybrids, tandems and MTB bikes. There are two self-catering gites that are great for families and groups, sleeping between 8 and 20 people (they can be hired individually or together). Le Magnolia Dordogne offers the best of both worlds, a relaxing retreat in a beautiful corner of the Dordogne countryside, yet easy to get to and with lots of things to do within easy reach, including the stunning Hautefort chateau. Emma, who spent some of her childhood here in France, moved back last year and has lovingly renovated this beautiful 'maison de maitre'. The rooms are light and airy, there's a lovely garden to relax in, and the river flows nearby. A delicious continental breakfast is included in the price, plus Emma can prepare packed lunches for your panniers. Cycling runs in the family, so there's plenty of local knowledge to share to help you make the most of your stay. From the door there are lovely, quiet leisure routes (including a traffic-free voie verte from Thiviers to Saint-Jean-de-Côle – one of France's most beautiful villages) and rides along the river. For MTB riders, there are more than 1000km of trails within reach. French and English spoken (plus a bit of German). Free wifi available, and hire bikes can be delivered to the door for you.

If you're seeking a relaxing retreat after a busy day's cycling, then Les Cerisiers is ideal. It was originally the maison gardienne or 'guardian's cottage' for the neighbouring villa. Completely separate from the villa, the cottage is private, peaceful and perfect for two. Recently renovated, it’s been stylishly updated with modern fittings and facilities, and is only a short cycle into Monpazier – a famous Dordogne village that's on the list of 'Most Beautiful Villages of France'. The cottage is ideal for exploring chateaux, prehistoric caves, hilltop villages and vineyards. French doors open onto your private stone terrace for al fresco dining, while a woodburning fireplace will keep you cosy in cooler months. Bike hire is available locally. If you don’t have a car, just catch a train from Bordeaux or Bergerac to Le Buisson-de-Cadouin or Siorac-en-Perigord and take a short taxi ride (or bike ride) to Monpazier. Bike hire can be arranged locally if you don't have your own wheels. Lots of local services, including boulangeries, pharmacy, ATM, a market on Thursday, plus supermarkets. There’s also a great Saturday market at Villereal – just a bike ride away. Free wifi. French and English spoken.

There can't be many better places to relax after a day on the bike than Mark and Denise's patch on the banks of the Dordogne near Sainte-Foy-la-Grande. I use the word 'patch' loosely given this B&B oasis is set in a beautiful old manoir house built in 1791 but lovingly restored by this friendly Australian couple. This tiny hamlet is a wonderful stop on a ride along the river Dordogne (Freewheeling France rides this area often, winding along the river and back up through the vines). From the door, the UNESCO-listed St-Emilion is a 40km bimble (en route to Bordeaux); in the other direction you'll find the sweet white vines of Monbazillac or, further east, the ancient cobbles of Sarlat. Mark and Denise have put a lot of love into this place, from elegantly decorated rooms to the complementary toiletries, chocs and bottled water that win points for pampering. At breakfast, Denise serves up a scrumptious spread, including omelettes, and will happily send you off with a packed lunch in your pannier. If you're arriving late she can do you a table d’hote – an evening meal worthy of a restaurant. Free wifi. Go canoeing on the river or wine-tasting (or just spend the day by the pool nibbling on one of Denise's platters). Don't stay too long, though - you may never leave.

Gensac – Chateau de Sanse

Elegant country hotel retreat overlooking vineyards

Sanse
33350 Sainte-Radegonde
Gironde, Aquitaine

Price from: €90

Open: All year

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the vines, Chateau de Sanse is an ideal base for exploring the beautiful corner of France that borders Dordogne and Gironde. The hotel is 25km south-east of UNESCO-listed Saint-Émilion, and 13km from Castillon-la-Bataille, start of the Lawrence of Arabia bike route. This is Freewheeling France's backyard – we ride these roads A LOT, and we love them. The roads from the door of Chateau de Sanse are a bit hilly, but they are achievable (we know of at least one cycle tour company that uses Chateau de Sanse as part of a family cycling itinerary). There are flatter river routes and voies vertes within reach, including the excellent Roger Lapebie bike route, which you can jump on just shy of Rauzan.
