Located just 500 metres from the Canal de Garonne – and midway between Bordeaux and Toulouse – Clare and Jean-Pierre's bike-friendly village house is an ideal base for a cycling holiday in the heart of the Lot-et-Garonne countryside. It's also a handy stop if you're cycling the canal. There are three double rooms, plus kitchen facilities, a pool and terrace. Bikes are available to hire onsite, or park your own in the secure garage. Clare and Jean-Pierre will be on hand to recommend local cycling routes and to help with maps and other local advice. This really is a super stop if you're cycling the Bordeaux to Toulouse bike route along the Canal de Garonne (just cross the bridge at the village of St-Jean-de-Thurac – there's even a B&B sign on the bridge for cyclists; it's just a 150 metre ride from the Canal towpath). Kate's small and friendly B&B has just 5 rooms, all with en suites and all with garden views. Kate can provide meals on request (plus there's coffee/tea and biscuits and cake on arrival, which we like a lot). The house itself is in a quiet hamlet just 9 kilometres from Agen, so this is a lovely alternative to a city hotel. If you're looking for a cyclist-run base for biking in a lesser-explored area of France, than this could be it. The Marshall family are cyclists who have spent two years creating comfortable and modern self-catered gites nestled in the ancient Foret de La Double halfway betwen Bordeaux and Perigueux. The nearest town is Montpon-Menesterol, which is on 5 designated local cycling circles. It's also on the Lawrence of Arabia bike route and the new Velo-route Voie verte de la Vallee de L'Isle, which goes all the way through to Perigueux. It's a safe car-free route along the river valley. The area also has lots to offer mountain bikers and families. The national park of La Jemaye is 20 minutes away and has beautiful cycling routes around the lake with places to swim and picnic. The gites themselves have modern creature comforts plus a safe storage area for bikes (there's a reliable repair shop in Montpon and hire bikes can be delivered to the door). The gites provide a beautiful-urban-meets rural space for cyclists of all levels. There's even a heated swimming pool for post-ride relaxation.
