This is a wonderful base from which to explore some of the most coveted climbs in world cycling. This area on the Alps/Provence border is a real hub for road cyclists, with some of the most famous climbs and descents in the world on your doorstep. The Col du Galibier is an obvious pick, or tackle the Izoard, rising from Briançon through larch forests to panoramic views. From here you can descend via the Casse Déserte, a ’moonscape’ in the heart of the Alps. The Col du Granon also offers a challenging climb followed by magnificent views. Pinewood offers flexible accommodation on a B&B or self-catered basis for groups of all sizes and solo riders. The stunning village of Villeneuve in the Serre Chevalier region has has plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops, while onsite there is a secure ski locker for up to 8 bikes, as well as a large locked garage. Lots of inhouse bikey knoweledge to share as well.

This 14-bed self-catered apartment is part of a larger chalet and the perfect base for road cycling holiday. Challenging cols like the Col de l’Iseran and Col de Petit St Bernard are within reach, but Tignes is also perfectly set up for mountain biking in summer, with a handful of lift accessed zones and plenty of cross country/enduro riding. Due to the resort's high altitude, it has some of the most diverse bike terrain in the Alps. "The owner is a serious cyclist with a bike room and he can help with ongoing repairs." From Chalet Savoie Faire, take on the nearby Col de la Madeleine, cycle up to Meribel, Courchevel and Val Thorens, ride the stunning Valley of Naves or meander on the quiet backroads to Albertville. Owners Nikki and Hugh are big supporters of cycling, Hugh using any excuse he can to get out on the bike. He'll be able to point you to some great local routes, such as the cycle track along the river from Aime to Bourg Saint Maurice, or the ride to Ugine to pick up the route back from Annecy (a nice 75km spin). The converted farmhouse has been a labour of love for Nikki and Hugh. Fully catered (Nikki is an excellent cook, who also runs a cookery school) and self-catered options for individuals and small groups available. Free wifi.
