If you're going to the D-Day Beaches and you want a real slice of war history, then you could do worse than stay in General George Patton's house. Patton's long association with France began during World War One and continued through to World War Two, with Patton serving in multiple theatres of war throughout France and farther afield. His house – now part of a trust run by his granddaughter Helen – is open for cyclists wanting to stay on a self-catered or B&B basis. It's 40km south of Cherbourg, 20km from Utah Beach and right on the official bike route that links Mont St-Michel to the D-Day Beaches. The house – and old priory – has triple, 6 doubles and a single. Don't forget to ask about Patton's secret campsite, which is not far from the house. English, French and German spoken. "The Living Flame Patton House offers all necessary facilities for bikers who wish to rest or wander," says Helen. There is also a Patton house apartment in Reims that's ideal for the Champagne bike routes.
