Alpine Velo run a friendly catered bike chalet just below the ski resort of Plagne Montalbert and not far from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, in the northern French Alps. Situated in a tiny mountain hamlet with breathtaking views across the mountain tops, the chalet can be rented room by room if you’re a couple or small group of friends, or on a sole occupancy basis for groups of up to 12. There are more than 10 stunning high altitude Alpine cols and climbs you can start and finish at the chalet, including 4 featured regularly in the Tour de France. This is a great base in particular for the Col de la Madeleine and the Cormet de Roselend. The chalet itself is stylishly renovated and has lots of rustic alpine charm. There’s a large sitting room with log stove, a dining room, 5 bedrooms with private bathrooms (all can be twins or doubles), sunny terraced gardens, an outdoor sauna and a secure bike store with workshop area. If you don’t fancy the homeward climb back to the chalet (6km/400m ascent), you can arrange a pickup from in the valley. English, French and Spanish spoken. E-bike hire can be arranged, and non-cyclists are welcome too.
