This is an ideal base for cyclists wanting to ride quiet country roads in a relatively undiscovered corner of Provence. La Bastide de Correns is a privately owned country house run by Aileen and Pat, who have a lifelong association with cycling. They are passionate about cycling and passionate about Provence, so they've created the perfect holiday retreat here for the rest of us to share. There are leisurely spins plus more demanding rides from the gate (Pat can provide maps to take you through vineyards and forests, around lakes, over hills and down valleys). Everything here is geared for cyclists – there's a swimming pool, fitness and wellness centre, post-ride massages, secure bike store, and washdown area. Correns itself is a small farming village known for its bio credentials. It's within reach of the Cote d'Azur and the magnificent Gorges du Verdon, and the towns and villages of Cotignac, Carces, Salernes, TourTour and Lorgues are all within riding distance. Aside from cycling and MTB, there's also hiking, rock-climbing, horse-riding, fishing, and kayaking on the doorstep. Ideal for groups and families (it can sleep from 4 to 12). French and English spoken.

There can be fewer nicer places to stay than a self-catering gite at the foot of the Ventoux that comes with its own restaurant for when you're too tired to cook. But that's what David and Fiejette have at La Fleur Bleue Restaurant & Gîtes in Crestet. There are two self-contained gites, each with two bedrooms and sleeping up to 5. From your door you are a measly 4.6km from the start of the Malaucène Ventoux climb, or a 17km warm up ride to Bédoin. When you get back, there's a hot tub in the cherry tree orchard (complete with views of Ventoux to remind you where you've been). Cook in your own kitchen or enjoy lunch or dinner in the restaurant courtyard (yes, with more Ventoux views). For non-cycling partners or for rest days, there are Roman excavations in Vaison la Romaine to discover, plus the vineyards of the Cotes du Rhone. Free wifi. French, Dutch and English spoken.
