One of the longest running specialist cycling chalets in the Alpe d'Huez area, Chalet Ribot is nestled in a tiny hamlet on hairpin 12 of the famous mountain. It's a 200-year-old traditional mountain house that thas been lovingly renovated and now offers 4 beautiful en-suite rooms and luxury outdoor spa facilities, including a hot tub, sauna and swim spa. Choose either B&B or half-board accommodation, which includes breakfast, afternoon tea and a three-course evening meal. Meals are cooked by an award-winning chef using local ingredients (think classic recipes mixed with mountain fare and ALWAYS with a cyclist's diet in mind). There's a fully kitted out workshop (see it here), and the owners, Letty and Harun, can help out with bike hire and route advice. Book ahead, though, as this place gets super busy and is always in high demand with both individual riders who return each year and with cycling groups.

The mythical 21 bends of Alpe d'Huez are just around the corner from Le Château d’Oz. The Galibier, Glandon and Croix de Fer are just up the road with their dramatic landscapes and lung-busting gradients. The Oisans has more than 30 routes, including famous stages from the Tour de France. All routes start from the door. Transport is available in the chalet's minibus by arrangement. Free wifi. Secured garage for bikes and maintenance/washdown area. Accommodation is flexible, offering both self-catered and catered options, with the latter including hot and Continental breakfasts, three-course evening meals and post-cycling pasta.

Auberge Edelweiss is a specialist bike hotel in the heart of the Alps; Robin and Marlon are keen to welcome more English-speaking riders to enjoy the Galibier, Col d'Izoard, Alpe d'Huez and Col du Lautaret – all within easy reach. The hotel has information folders with profiles of all key climbs, plus cycling itineraries for both road and mountain bike routes (see their cycling page). The hotel is geared up for individual riders as well as groups, and can cater for big events like La Marmotte, Alpe d'Huzes, the Tour de France and Etape du Tour. Well-equiped workshop, plus Marlon and Robin work with a local bike shop that can deliver spares. Bike wash and sauna onsite; massages available on request. Oh, and plenty of wine and cold beer to help you relax on the terrace or in the restaurant. Les Camélias has 6 self-contained apartments of various sizes and layouts, each sleeping between 3 and 5. The apartments are owned and run by cyclists for cyclists. Located in the middle of the Auvergne volcano region, they are at the foot of the Col de la Croix-Morand, the Col de Guéry, the Col de Croix Saint Robert, and well-placed for the the climb to La Stèle. A wide variety of routes are available from Les Camélias on paper or downloadable as GPS track (a GPS can be rented). After a day of cycling you can relax in the garden and enjoy its stunning views. Les Camélias features a place to hose down mountain bikes, secure and spacious bike storage, workshop/maintenance area. There is a free laundry service for cycling cloths. Bike hire can be arranged by Vélo Plus, just 6km down the road. Apartments available on self-catering or B&B basis.

The perfect base for exploring Normandy's western coast along the spectacular Cotentin peninsula. Les Tonneaux is a peaceful two-bedroom farmhouse retreat in the Cotentin National Park, 1km from the historic town of Lessay. Just 5km from the sandy beaches of St-Germain-sur-Ay and Creances, and 50m from the converted railway line that now forms part of the national cycle path from Cherbourg to Mont St Michel. It can sleep up to 6 people.
