The hotel is owned by cyclists (we parked our bikes in the garage with their bikes), and has accueil velo accreditation through the tourist board. As with most French hotels that aren't B&Bs, breaksfast costs extra (it's big enough to power a day on the bike). Wifi is fast and free (I'm writing this from the hotel), and the rooms are clean and comfortable. This is a great mid-range option for anyone cycling through Rochefort. (I'll post a full review here soon). ** We've stayed here – read our review. **

Family run hotel-restaurant on the EuroVelo 6 bike route
On EuroVelo 6, Hotel Fernoux-Coutenet is used to welcoming cyclists (the hotel is part of the Logis group and it meets the group's bike-friendly standards). Rochefort-sur-Nenon is a lovely stop for cycling – it's a fortified village near the Doubs river. The Chaux forest neighbours the village, providing a peaceful space for walks and rides. The building itself dates back to 1857, and still carries much of this old charm, though the rooms themselves and the decor are quiet basic. Buffet breakfast (I'm told it's 'big'). The hotel has its own bar (for tasting the wines from neighbouring Burgundy), as well as its own restaurant, which serves local menus prepared with local produce. Free wifi.

Secluded country B&B run by cyclists
Seriously! Who wouldn't want to ride their bike down this driveway? Le Manoir du Butel is a farmhouse B&B run by cyclists near Saint-Armand, east of the Tour du Manche route at Le Mesnil-Raoult (17km south-east of St-Lo). The French owners tell us that they regularly welcome touring cyclists and that they are indeed cyclists themselves (MTB riders). They will be able to help with local routes etc. The B&B is around 4km from the nearest large town with a restaurant, but the owners say they are happy to take you there if your legs aren't up to the task after a day on the bike. What more could you want?!

The small chateau has clean rooms with breakfast being served in a Louis XIV-styled state room. Sarlat is a large medieval town in the heart of the Dordogne Valley. It's a handy stop if you are cycling in the Dordogne and an ideal base if you are wanting to explore the area's prehistoric treasures. Hotel La Couleuvrine is right in the middle of town. We're told by cyclists who stayed there that it is very bike-friendly and has a lock-up bike storage room. It also has a very good restaurant.

If you're travelling with a bike, the Hotel d'Albion is a good choice. It's got good bike storage and a hire shop nearby. The hotel itself has free wifi and a bar with views across the town and lavender fields beyond. A cyclist who stayed here told us the hotel staff were friendly and helped organise taxis and other bits and bobs. No air-conditioning, though, so ask for a room on the lower floors, which are apparently cooler.
