Friendly eco-hotel just across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower

I stayed here the last time I was in Paris with my bike. Hotel Gavarni is a friendly, character-filled hotel (the lift stops on half-floors, so I was on floor three-and-a-half(!) It's located a handy ride from Gare Saint-Lazare, where many trains come into from the north of France (I was coming from Normandy). Better still, it’s just across the river from the Eiffel Tower, a short walk from the Trocadéro gardens and an easy walk to the Champs-Élysées; a few blocks away is the vast expanse of the Bois de Boulogne. I was astounded to find this affordable, quality three-star hotel so close to key attractions. Family rooms available; the posher rooms have views of the top of the Eiffel Tower, though my budget room was perfectly functionable and quiet (no city noise coming through the window). Free wifi. The hotel also has a green policy: everything is recycled, it uses renewable energy and eco-friendly detergents. The Hotel Regina in Paris is perhaps not the cheapest option for staying in the capital, but it is a highly sought-after location for the final stage of the Tour de France for viewing along Rue de Rivoli or around Jardin des Tuileries. Housed in an old stone cottage building the Hotel Le Grand Logis is nicely situated for riders using the Velo Francette cycle route. The rooms overlook well tended gardens or the old town and a continental breakfast with fresh pastries, homemade jams, eggs, yogurt, bread, fruit, fresh coffee and hot chocolate is served. Le Grand Logis has been recommended to us by cyclists who rode the Francette on a tandem. They stored their bike in a private enclosed/walled garden and described the hosts as "a delight". Free wifi. Parthenay - Maison Saint Jacques

Friendly B&B and self-catering accommodation on La Velo Francette

Cyclists who stayed at Maison Saint Jacques have recommended it to us. It's run by an English couple called Dorit and Trevor, and they have lived in the area for quite some time and know it well. We're told they are both friendly and knowledgable and that the place itself of full of character and charm. (And that breakfast includes fresh, homemade treats). It's a 14th century townhouse in the old timber style, and has its own courtyard and small garden. It's set in the centre of Parthenay, so close to local restaurants and shops for restocking panniers. There is a B&B room plus a self-catering apartment. It also carries accueil velo status so has all the bikey bases covered. French and English spoken.

Perfect for cyclists arriving into Perigueux by bike

If you're riding into Perigueux by bike, this hotel is spot on. Hotel Ibis Périgueux Centre is located across the river from the wonderful Voie Verte des Berges de l'Isle, which delivers you in to the city centre (we rode in from Thiviers) and also links with the V90 l'Isle veloroute that heads west. You are right in the middle of town and just 1km from the train station (for links to Bordeaux and Paris). The hotel has free wifi, a bar and restaurant and a continental breakfast (as with most French hotels, breakfast is offered for a surcharge). The hotel also has a locked cellar that was perfect for our bikes (access is only via reception).

Basic but affordable stop on the Velo Francette route

We stayed at the bike-friendly Le Relais du Commerce on the final stretch of our La Velo Francette ride. In the heart of Suisse Normande, this is arguably one of the prettiest stretches of the ride. The hotel itself is pretty basic, but it's good value and clean. There's a dedicated bike shed at the rear of the hotel, and a restaurant onsite serving local fare; the food was OK but we'd probably try a local eatery next time. Rooms at the front of the hotel open up on to the balcony which overlooks the town (the balcony is ideal for airing wet and smelly cycling kit too). Free wifi. Hotel du Chateau Pontivy has been recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here. "It's on the Nantes-Brest Canal and cycle friendly with an outside locked storeroom. It was very welcoming and near the centre," they write. It's owned by Marie and Christophe Gautier, who have run the hotel since 2017. Rooms are clean and modern, and all are acessed by an elevator. Le Clos Saint-Vincent is a 4-star hotel that's popular with cyclists on the Alsace wine route. It is used by a number of cycling tour companies, so it is very welcoming towards riders. Roughly 15km north of Colmar, it's a great base for exploring the Alsace vineyards. In fact, it's right in the middle of them, with stunning views of the surrounding vines. There is an on-site restaurant serving local cuisine (you can eat in the dining room or on the terrace – both have views of the countryside out over the Vosges mountains). Logis Hotel Lafayette a warm and welcoming bike-friendly hotel in the Rochefort town centre, just a short walk from the maritime museum and the famed Hermione frigate. The hotel is owned by cyclists (we parked our bikes in the garage with their bikes), and has accueil velo accreditation through the tourist board. As with most French hotels that aren't B&Bs, breaksfast costs extra (it's big enough to power a day on the bike). Wifi is fast and free (I'm writing this from the hotel), and the rooms are clean and comfortable. This is a great mid-range option for anyone cycling through Rochefort. Rochefort-sur-Nenon - Hotel Fernoux-Coutenet

Family run hotel-restaurant on the EuroVelo 6 bike route

On EuroVelo 6, Hotel Fernoux-Coutenet is used to welcoming cyclists (the hotel is part of the Logis group and it meets the group's bike-friendly standards). Rochefort-sur-Nenon is a lovely stop for cycling – it's a fortified village near the Doubs river. The Chaux forest neighbours the village, providing a peaceful space for walks and rides. The building itself dates back to 1857, and still carries much of this old charm, though the rooms themselves and the decor are quiet basic. Buffet breakfast (I'm told it's 'big'). The hotel has its own bar (for tasting the wines from neighbouring Burgundy), as well as its own restaurant, which serves local menus prepared with local produce. Free wifi.
