Search for accommodation:Friendly hotel and restaurant in the heart of the Ardeche region
Hotel/restaurant near the Dorne river and just 1km from the L’Eyrieux River at Le Cheylard. This is a good base for riding in the Ardeche area of the Rhone-Alps. There are seven rooms, plus a posher suite with a jacuzzi. There are also two rooms for people with reduced mobility (this is a great as we've had a number of cyclists with disabilities get in touch over the last year or so and they say they struggle to find accessible rooms in France – and especially in and around the Alps). There's also a family room with a bunk bed. There's a secure bike garage 50m from the hotel and free wifi. The owners here offer a personal service, with guests often invited for a drink in the bar. The restaurant serves local cuisine (and local wine) and you can eat on the terrace when the sun's out. Free wifi. We stayed here when we were cycling the Ardéchoise sportive and the Dolce Via – read our review here.

Warm and luxurious stop on the banks of the Dordogne River
212 Route de la Nougarede
24130
Le Fleix, Sainte-Foy-la-Grande
Dordogne, Aquitaine
Price from: €140 for a double
Open: Easter to September
There can't be many better places to relax after a day on the bike than on the banks of the Dordogne near Sainte-Foy-la-Grande. This grand B&B oasis is set in a beautiful old manoir house built in 1791. The tiny hamlet is a wonderful stop on a ride along the river Dordogne (Freewheeling France rides this area often, winding along the river and back up through the vines). From the door, the UNESCO-listed St-Emilion is a 40km ride (en route to Bordeaux); in the other direction you'll find the sweet white vines of Monbazillac, the city of Bergerac and, further east, the ancient cobbles of Sarlat. This is a worthy stop on any Dordogne Valley bike route.

Riverside hotel that's a popular stopping point for cyclists
Domaine de la Courbe is a popular riverside stop for cyclists riding the south portion of the Sarthe à Vélo bike network around the Vallée du Loir: a voie verte greenway route goes directly from Le Lude westwards to La Flèche, while to the east there's a (mostly) riverside shared route head towards Chateau-du-Loir. The hotel carries the accueil velo label, so it's well used to welcoming riders. This really is an idyllic location, with hotel set among the trees. It's a little pricier than your standard hotel, but the pool, spa and onsite restaurant may all combine to make it a little bit hard to leave once you do park up here. Ultra budget option close to the city centre
40 rue du Vert Galant
72000
Le Mans
Sarthe, Pays de la Loire
Price from: €29
Open: All year
Make no mistake: this is an budget option. I paid €39 for a room, though this can be as cheap as €29 depending on the night of the week and the season. And you get what you pay for: a bed, a bedside table, a clean but dated shower / toilet room. But, quite frankly, that was all I needed. I'd just ridden the Le Mans 24-hour Sportive and this was perfect. All I wanted to do was sleep and this fitted the bill perfectly. The lady on reception didn't look twice when, smelling and not having slept or showered in almost 36 hours, I wheeled my bike into reception. Fully laden with panniers and a tent that I was consciously refusing to use again that night, the bike fitted nicely in the elevator and I took it up to my room and parked it against the wall. I then collapsed for 12 hours of slumber in my super basic 6th floor room. For €39, it was something akin to heaven. Breakfast not included.

Reliable 4-star hotel recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here (and good value for money given the quality). It's located right near the Dordogne River (some rooms have river views). The name is a little misleading as the town of Saint-Emilion is some 10km away, though it's a lovely ride from Libourne up through the vineyards of Pomerol and onto Saint-Emilion. (The vineyards of Fronsac are lesser explored and also make for beautiful cycling to Libourne's north-west). Charming B&B on the Veloscenic Paris to Mont St-Michel bike route
Aux Charmes de Maintenon is what you get when successful haute couture Parisian milliners pack it all in and move to the country to start their own B&B. Jose and Carmen's lovingly restored listed building dates back to the time of Louis XIV, and features five tastefully renovated rooms. While the place has oodles of beauty and charm, it's overwhelmingly their personal touch that makes Aux Charme de Maintenon. There's an exquisite landscaped French garden behind the house, plus a sauna and a swimming pool. Carmen's homecooked tables d'hotes features foie gras, la coquille Saint-Jacques and creme brûlée (and of course a good local wine). Aux Charme de Maintenon – within spitting distance of Chateau de Maintenon – is also close to the start/finish of the Maintenon leg of the Veloscenic. Free wifi. English and French spoken.
