We stayed at the bike-friendly Le Relais du Commerce on the final stretch of our La Velo Francette ride. In the heart of Suisse Normande, this is arguably one of the prettiest stretches of the ride. The hotel itself is pretty basic, but it's good value and clean. There's a dedicated bike shed at the rear of the hotel, and a restaurant onsite serving local fare; the food was OK but we'd probably try a local eatery next time. Rooms at the front of the hotel open up on to the balcony which overlooks the town (the balcony is ideal for airing wet and smelly cycling kit too). Free wifi. Double and triple rooms, all with en suites.

Secluded country B&B run by cyclists
Seriously! Who wouldn't want to ride their bike down this driveway? Le Manoir du Butel is a farmhouse B&B run by cyclists near Saint-Armand, east of the Tour du Manche route at Le Mesnil-Raoult (17km south-east of St-Lo). The French owners tell us that they regularly welcome touring cyclists and that they are indeed cyclists themselves (MTB riders). They will be able to help with local routes etc. The B&B is around 4km from the nearest large town with a restaurant, but the owners say they are happy to take you there if your legs aren't up to the task after a day on the bike. Just a few kilometres from Saint-Cyprien, it's ideally located for exploring all the key tourist sites of the Dordogne and Vezere valleys, including the medieval market town of Sarlat, prehistoric sites at Les Eyzies and La Roque-Gageac and, of course, the UNESCO-listed caves at Lascaux. It also holds cooking courses from March to October. Free wifi. Swimming pool and terrace. BBQ. Honesty bar. Communal kitchenette for guest use. Kettles in the rooms, too, which is still something of a rarity at French B&Bs. Free house bikes for guest use.

Ancient Templar house-turned-hotel in the heart of Saint-Émilion
Clean and stylish 2-star hotel in the heart of UNESCO-listed Saint-Émilion. The hotel itself is part of the ancient fabric of the town, being set in an old Templar house. It's within walking distance of local restaurants and wine shops (which can arrange shipment home, just in case you were wondering...). From the door you can ride almost straight out into the vines. Doubles, twins and family rooms. This hotel is a real bargain off-season, though the price (as with everything in this tourist hotspot) tends to skyrocket in summer. The hotel has a private car parking area that's locked (it's often used by cycle tour groups). Free wifi. French and English spoken.
