This fabulous itinerary takes you a little off the beaten track in the wider Bordeaux wine region. Based around Europe's largest river estuary, it explores two different sides to the Bordeaux region. From La Rochelle's ancient fortified harbour, you'll ride on the Atlantic Velodyssee Euro Velo 1 route along beaches, through marshes and pine forests. You'll discover the city of Rochefort and its 'Corderie Royale', Brouage citadel built by the French engineer Vauban, the marshes of Marennes, the oyster-farming port of La Tremblade and the coastal town of Royan. You'll cross the Gironde Estuary by ferry to Le Verdon and continue your bike trip across Médoc peninsula. You'll cycle along the seashore then through grand cru vineyards such as Mouton-Rothschild. This 10-day self-guided cycling holiday is a delightful mix of vineyards and history. From Bordeaux, start by discovering the vineyards of Saint-Emilion and its famous village and then onto the vineyards of Bergerac and Monbazillac, famous for its sweet white wines.
