This fixed base tour – offered guided or unguided – explores the amazing diversity of scenery around the medieval town of St Antonin Noble Val, which must be one of France’s best-kept cycling secrets. The town is in the dramatic Aveyron Gorge, with cliffs rising sheer from the valley floor. You’ll discover secluded valleys, oak forests vineyards and austere limestone plateaux, all on very quiet roads. The region also has some of the best preserved medieval villages in France, especially the fortified hilltop bastide towns. The terrain is hilly, but gradients are always gentle. You’ll be staying in Saint Antonin Noble Velo's own 16th century auberge in the centre of St Antonin. Rides are typically 80-120km with around 1000m of climbing, but they can be tailored to suit different abilities. This really varied and interesting tour starts just 30 minutes away from Paris in Rambouillet, a village with a cobbled main street, a King Louis XVI medieval towered château with English gardens that mimic Versailles (complete with grand canals), and Marie-Antoinette’s dairy hamlet. The tours are run by Thor, a passionate local who's keen to introduce this area to more international cyclists. He'll meet you at the train station and take you to pick up hire bikes if you don't have your own. He'll then take you into the heart of Forêt de Rambouillet, Paris' regional forest – a stunning blend of wildlife and fauna, quaint villages, farmland, rolling hills, valleys and waterways. Price includes bottled mineral water, a mini picnic of local farm products, and bike rental. The day is spent cycling mainly on bicycle paths and trails. This is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the French capital, and see, taste and explore Paris’ scenic countryside.
