It focuses on the area between the Dordogne and Garonne rivers, an area famous for its clarets and rich gastronomy. This is a region steeped in history, with fortified stone villages (bastides) scattered across the gently undulating landscape – a reminder of years gone by when this land was contested by the French and English during the Hundred Years War. This is an idyllic ride through the rich history – and the beautiful wines – of south-west France. All accommodation, baggage transport, route notes and bike hire included.

We're a bit impartial to this itinerary at FWF because we live on the route; we ride these roads a lot and know what a wonderful area it is for cycling. On this itinerary, you head out of Bordeaux on the Roger Lapebie bike route and into the vines of the Entre deux Mers, its undulating landscape providing stunning views across the valley. You'll loop back up through Rauzan (if you're lucky you'll catch its famous antiques market) before continuing on to the old UNESCO-listed town of St-Emilion for a glass of red among the vines. It's then east to Ste-Foy-la-Grande (try and time your trip to be there on a Saturday morning for the market – voted the best in France). Further east is Bergerac and Montbazillac (beware the hill!), home to some of the region's finest sweet white wines (and at a fraction of the prices of Sauternes). From here it's into the Dordogne proper for pre-history, hill-top villages and more river valleys. Price includes B&B hotel accommodation, travel folder and maps in French or English, luggage transfers, bike hire, and emergency phone support. (If you take this trip, email me at FWF so we can join you for a day stretch).
