Les 3 Lieux hotel is at Les Ponts de Cé, on the Loire river, just south of Angers. Bob and Jim stayed here on their Loire cycle tour – read their report here. They report: "This was possibly the fanciest hotel we stayed at and – as you would expect – everything was fine, including the dinner." The restaurant is expensive but there is a pizzeria just a short walk away. Bike storage was outside, but it was locked and covered, so it was excellent.

Lésignac-Durand - Chateau de la Redortière (Charente)

A Belle Époque chateau that's a great stopover on the EV3

Château de la Redortière in Lézignac-Durand has been recommended to us by a cyclist, Natalie, who stayed there while riding the Euro Velo 3 Pilgrims' route (La Scandibérique). It offers B&B-style hotel accommodation with countryside views. There is also an onsite restaurant specialising in French cuisine. It's open for dinner and lunch, but it's best to call ahead to let them know you're coming. The chateau is a working dairy farm, so you get a real feel for the French countryside here in calm and peaceful surrounds.

Libourne - Mercure Saint-Emilion

Quality hotel at the gateway to the Pomerol/Saint-Emilion vines

Reliable 4-star hotel recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here (and good value for money given the quality). It's located right near the Dordogne River (some rooms have river views). The name is a little misleading as the town of Saint-Emilion is some 10km away, though it's a lovely ride from Libourne up through the vineyards of Pomerol and onto Saint-Emilion. (The vineyards of Fronsac are lesser explored and also make for beautiful cycling to Libourne's north-west). Libourne is a good stop if you're arriving in the area by train from Paris, if you're cycling from Bordeaux 35km away, or if you're heading from/to the Atlantic Coast route via Royan. Free wifi. Onsite bar. Management tell us they can find a room inside the hotel to safely store bikes. French, English and Spanish spoken.

Friendly riverside hotel with quality in-house restaurant

Situated near the banks of the river Loir, this hotel has a large garden and good bike storage. There is also a very good restaurant in the hotel for dinner. There were only a few guests when we stayed so the menu was limited menu, but is was just fine. Cloyes-sur-le-Loir is 60km west of Orleans and 50km north of Blois.

Joanne would like to welcome more cyclists to her cosy Loire cottage. Enjoy lake and forest rides from this lovely rural setting – it's on quiet backroads that feature on regional and national cycle routes. It's around 17km north of the river between Saumur and Tours, making it an excellent base from which to explore the Loire Valley. Loire Valley bike route - La Coulée Verte (Val-du-Layon)

Cycle-friendly B&B just south of the river Loire at Angers

La Coulee Verte is a small and friendly B&B run by Vanessa, a professional harpist. She's hit all the right notes (sorry!) with La Coulee Verte. It's ideally placed for exploring the vineyard routes of the Loire Valley, and is just a few kilometres from official signposted Loire à Vélo routes as they follow the river south of Angers. Her B&B sleeps 10 people in a combination doubles and triples. The house itself is surrounded by and overlooks vineyards, and there is wine-tasting in the nearby village of St Aubin. Vanessa offers evening meals by arrangement – an excellent option for late arrivals, while the kitchen is also available for guest use. This is an ideal stopover B&B, as well as a great base for longer stays for cyclists of all abilities - from solo riders and couples to groups and families. English and French spoken.

Camping Robinson at Marseillan Plage is ideal for the start/end of Canal du Midi bike rides, being 7km from Agde and a 16km ride along the Mediterranean coast to/from Sete. The campsite – which has been a fixture on the south coast for more than 30 years – offers direct access to the beach at Marseillan Plage, but there's also a onsite swimming pool and waterpark. Set across 2.5 hectares, it's a peaceful and green site. Tent pitches plus mobile homes and cabins for rent. Some cabins face straight onto the beach and would be wonderful for a fixed base stay for a few days. There are also 'modulo'camp' pitches or wooden huts for cyclists. You pitch your tent near these and get added benefits of a fridge, coffee machine, picnic table and electricity.

We stayed at Hotel La Marjolaine on our La Velo Francette bike ride (see here for our Angers to Mayenne report). Hotel La Marjolaine really is an excellent base for cycling. The hotel has its own fleet of bikes (see photo above) in a massive bike storage room (plenty of room for repairs and maintenance). The restaurant is excellent, serving fine local cuisine, and the breakfasts are fit for any cyclist. The hotel has lovely gardens, and rooms either overlook these or the Mayenne River itself. This is a super place from which to explore the wonderful Mayenne River bike path south towards Laval (and the Loire) or north towards Domfront. French and English spoken. Free wifi.

Cosy accommodation near the Cevennes National Park

Mende is a great base for cycling. It's something of an off-the-beaten track destination, slightly less so recently thanks to a few appearances on the Tour de France route. It makes a great destination for cycling due to is its proximity on the edge of the wonderful Cévennes National Park. There are lots of MTB routes here, along with quiet road routes through beautiful gorges. Hotel de France is based in the centre of town and has a lovely terrace for dining.

Metz boasts some wonderful architecture with the Gothic Saint-Stephen Cathedral having the largest expanse of stained-glass windows in the world. This hotel has been recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here (there is a dedicated bike shed). L'Armateur is an 18th-century house that's been converted into a modern and stylish hotel. It's in the centre of Moissac, just 50m from the Canal de Garonne bike route. The rooms at the Hotel l'Armateur have views over the garden or the town. Free wifi plus the rooms have kettles for tea and coffee – something of a rarity in French hotels. The common areas in the hotel are air-conditioned and there is a swimming pool in the garden. The restaurant serves traditional and regional cuisine (you can also eat on the terrace).
