L'Epinay Le Comte - The Bakehouse (near Domfront)

Cosy converted bakehouse for 2 in Normandy's cycling heartland

The perfect base for couples and friends looking to explore northern France. The Bakehouse sits of the western edge of the Parc naturel régional Normandie-Maine, and near the junction of the Orne and Manche departments of Normandy and the Mayenne in Pays de la Loire. This is prime cycling country, with 5 local signposted bike routes between 14km-30km (maps available), including 2 routes passing the Bakehouse's doors. Hotel La Closerie is local 4-star hotel run by Nathalie and Dominique. It's on the Velocean bike route between Pénestin and Saint-Nazaire. It's located in seaside La Boule, from where you can follow a spur on the bike route out to the peninsula at Le Croisic. Art Deco style hotel on La Sarthe à Vélo bike route

Bike-friendly hotel that's well-used to welcoming cyclists (and motorcyclists as well as fans of the Le Mans 24-hour car race). You could say it ticks all the sporting boxes. There are 22 rooms which fall into 'standard and 'deluxe' categories, so something for all budgets. There is also an onsite bar and restaurant/brasserie, which Jacqui and Adrian ate at when they cycled La Sarthe à Vélo for us. (They say they ate like kings). Terrace, swimming pool plus gardens that back on to the river Loir. The hotel has been independently owned for more than a century, and previous guests have included French presidents, members of the Kennedy family, racing legend Stirling Moss and none other than Hollywood star Steve McQueen.

La Châtaigneraie – Logis Hotel Le 120

Family run hotel on the Vendée regional cycling route in western France

Hotel Le 120 at La Châtaigneraie on the Vendée regional bike route may look a bit desolate and sparse from the outside but the feedback we've had from cyclists who stayed here was positive. We're told it's a locally run hotel, clean and efficient. We also contacted management about bikes and they told us cyclists were welcome and that there is a safe room in the hotel for overnight bike storage. They offer an "authentic" family friendly experience, which is a good thing given they are within reach of Puy du Fou, one of France'e most popular theme parks. They are also within reach of the wonderful Marais Poitevin marshlands – a cycling paradise of canals and waterways. Breakfast is provided each day – enjoy a sweet and savoury buffet of breads, pastries, brioches, cereals, fruits and cold meats, as well as honey from a local producer. There is also an in-house restaurant serving local cuisine. Twinsk doubles, triples and quads – ideal fro groups and families.

The 3-star Camping Domaine de La Palme at La Palme is just 5km from the Mediterranean coast near the end of the Narbonne stretch diversion of the Canal du Midi bike route. It around a 8km coastal ride from Port-la-Nouvelle. Tent pitches, as well as self-catered rentals including tents on stilts, canvas bungalows and chalets. This quiet, family campsite sits near a large saltwater lake on the edge of the Mediterranean, providing plenty of opportunities for swimming and water sports. Further afield, explore vineyards or watch the flamingos on the salt pans. Pool. Free wifi. Bar/restaurant with pizzeria.

Friendly hotel set in orchard and gardens with onsite restaurant

Le Soloro was recommended to us by Hilde, who stayed there in 2014 on her Caen-Honfleur bike ride. The hotel is a few kilometres south of Brionne, in the village of La Riviere Thibouville. The hotel, Hilde said, had seen better days: "The gardens were overgrown and from the outside it looked rundown," she says, "but la patronne was very friendly, our room was lovely and we ate at the hotel that evening. Super bike-friendly hotel in the middle of lovely La Rochelle, gateway to Île de Ré, and on the Atlantic Coast EuroVelo 1 La Vélodyssée route, as well as La Velo Francette from La Rochelle to Caen. The Best Western Masqhotel is a member of the Accueil Vélo 'cyclists welcome' tourist initiative. Its bike services are too many to mention here, but they include: a hotel 'bike book' of rides and route suggestions; a 'cyclists' welcome tray' with mineral water, biscuits, tea and coffee; luggage transfer service; hotel bikes for guest use (with advance notice); lunch baskets; and cleaning kits. You can read the hotel's official bike policy on its website. It also meets official French standards for eco hotels. 24-hour room service. Generous buffet breakfasts plus onsite bar/lounge. Free wifi throughout the hotel as well as internet stations for guest use. Hotel manager, Christine, and her staff are bilingual and keen to welcome more English-speaking cyclists to the hotel.

The hotel has 45 rooms (doubles, triples and quadruples), which makes it convenient for groups.

Mayenne river hotel handy for towpath access

This place may not live up to its illustrious Monopoly address (Rue de la Paix is Mayfair on the French version), but it's still a handy base for anyone passing through Laval on La Velo Francette. It's right in the centre of town, close to the river towpath, it has a garage for bike parking and offers a good spread for breakfast (see picture). Family friendly with cots and adjoining rooms available to provide extra beds and space. Good hotel for sharers as there is a range of room combinations – doubles, triples and quads. La Velo Francette - L'Ancien Pressoir

Cozy B&B in the heart of wonderful Suisse-Normandie

Just a 10km (mostly) river ride from the La Velo Francette route at Pont-d'Ouilly, this B&B is a lovely stop in one of the most beautiful (and lesser discovered) corners of Normandy. Suisse-Normandie is a beautiful region of rolling hills and river routes for road riders (with easy access to the ferry port at Caen for cross-Channel riders or to Paris in nearby Domfront, where La Veloscenie passes), but there are also some 800km of mountain bike tracks here, making it one of France's MTB hotspots for fun off-road trails without the sharp peaks of the Pyrenees or Alps. The owner speaks French, English, German and Dutch and we are told she offers a cozy B&B welcome in her 200-year-old village house. Free wifi.

La Vélo Francette – La Maison 1833

Stylish and friendly family run B&B south of Domfront

We stayed at Maison 1833 when we cycled La Vélo Francette. At the time it had just opened and its potential was clear. It's run by Katherine and Christophe, a well-travelled French couple who have opted for a quieter life after years of international travel and living. The B&B is a short detour from the actual Francette route but it's worth the ride if you're after a spot of homely luxury on your cycling holiday. There are only two rooms, making this is a 'proper' B&B experience (you'll leave half-believing you've known Katherine and Christophe for much longer than the length of your stay). Katherine is a wonderful cook – say 'yes' to her offer of table d'hôtes for a lavish feast to fuel you for a week (though save room for the exceptional breakfast she'll serve up the next day). Free wifi. Katherine and Christophe will also go out of their way to help you plan the next stage of your journey if you need some local advice or support. French and English spoken.

Lakeside camping within view of the Alps

With a wonderful setting close to the beautiful Lac d'Annecy and surrounded by the mountains of the Bauges national park, this site provides all that is required for either a relaxing holiday or something more adventurous. The lac has numerous walking trails and there is a dedicated cycle patch alongside the water, as well as watersprorts and even a beach. It would also offer a superb base should a Tour de France or Dauphine stage be hosted nearby. All standard facilities are provided along with snack-bar and sale of fresh bread.

Hotel Tilleuls Medieval has an enviable location being set in a medieval town close to the River Garonne and surrounded by some of the world's most famous vineyards. Langres - Le Chapitre Guesthouse

Small and elegant B&B on the Meuse River cycle route

Langres is stunning small town. Everything is walkable and encircled by ramparts dotted with artillery towers and punctured by fortified gates. This small B&B in the centre of Langres is a family-run affair. Régine, Etienne and their dog – a Basset Artésien Normand – greeted us with a wagging tail (the hound) and bottles of cold water. The water was particularly welcome after pedalling – and finally pushing – our loaded bikes up the steep hill between the station and Langres. The following morning we were packed off onto the Meuse Cycle Route with a picnic.

A unique place to stay in the heart of rural SW France

Hotel-Restaurant-Spa L'Auberge de Larressingle is an amazing setting at the foot of the fortified 13th-century walls of the town of Larressingle in the Gers region of SW France. It's just west of two fabulous bike routes: the Véloroute de la Vallée de la Baise and the Voie Verte de l'Armagnac from Condom to Lagraulet. L'Auberge de Larressingle is a former Gascon farm, completely renovated and fitted out, and offering an in-house restaurant with fine stone walls and a shaded terrace facing the fortified walls where you can enjoy fine local cuisine. There is also a wellness area (spa, sauna and treatment room) in a glorious old tobacco barn. There are just 12 guest rooms here, making it an intimate and unique place to stay. Doubles, as well as family rooms sleeping up to 5 people. This hotel is great value for money – a stay in a similar place almost anywhere else would cost a LOT more.

Le Barroux - La Ferme des Bélugues (for Ventoux)

A lovely cyclist-run base close to Ventoux and lavender routes

La Ferme des Bélugues offers both B&B and self-catered accommodation. It's a home from home run by Karen and Spencer, both cyclists. Located just 3km from the start of the Ventoux climb at Malaucène or 10km from Bedoin, it's the perfect base for an assault on one of the most iconic Tour de France summits. For gentler rides, the lavender fields and vineyards of Provence are within easy reach. Karen and Spencer host independent riders as well as cycle tour companies and pro riders, so it's fair to say they are local cycling experts. They arrived here four years ago and have lovingly renovated the house to ensure it is cycling-friendly while also retaining its original charm and character. All the facilities are geared towards cyclists: there's a pool for post-ride cooling off (and perfect for non-cycling partners and friends) and a stunning bike room, while extra services such as bike hire, massages, and yoga can be arranged. In all there are 5 double rooms plus a self-catering studio for two people.

La Maison de la Fontaine is at Le Beny Bocage, near the EuroVelo 4 Tour de Manche bike route. The B&B is just 3km from the excellent Souleuvre Viaduct at Carville, an outdoor adventure centre with an AJ Hackett bungy jumping site, as well as an zipwire course and family luge. EuroVelo 4 is signposted straight through the viaduc, which is well worth a stop for lunch (restaurant and picnic area onsite). Le Beny Bocage also links to the D-Day Beaches, Bayeux and Mont St Michel on the EV4. La Maison de la Fontaine has 5 rooms, including a family room. There is a terrace and guests can make use of free wifi. Picnics are also available for your panniers (usually featuring a mixed salad, a sandwich, seasonal fruit, a drink and a cereal bar). Gourmet evening meals available – the owners, Christophe and Sandrine, used to work for Lenôtre, the famous French confectioner. Accueil Velo-rated. Continental breakfast available. From Le Beny Bocage you can also cross to join the Velo Francette to the east at Saint-Remy or Thury-Harcourt.

Le Fleix - Le Manoir du Bois Mignon (Sainte-Foy-la-Grande)

Warm and luxurious stop on the banks of the Dordogne River

There can't be many better places to relax after a day on the bike than on the banks of the Dordogne near Sainte-Foy-la-Grande. This grand B&B oasis is set in a beautiful old manoir house built in 1791. The tiny hamlet is a wonderful stop on a ride along the river Dordogne (Freewheeling France rides this area often, winding along the river and back up through the vines). From the door, the UNESCO-listed St-Emilion is a 40km ride (en route to Bordeaux); in the other direction you'll find the sweet white vines of Monbazillac, the city of Bergerac and, further east, the ancient cobbles of Sarlat. This is a worthy stop on any Dordogne Valley bike route.

Riverside hotel that's a popular stopping point for cyclists

Domaine de la Courbe is a popular riverside stop for cyclists riding the south portion of the Sarthe à Vélo bike network around the Vallée du Loir: a voie verte greenway route goes directly from Le Lude westwards to La Flèche, while to the east there's a (mostly) riverside shared route head towards Chateau-du-Loir. The hotel carries the accueil velo label, so it's well used to welcoming riders. This really is an idyllic location, with hotel set among the trees. It's a little pricier than your standard hotel, but the pool, spa and onsite restaurant may all combine to make it a little bit hard to leave once you do park up here. Convenient city centre hotel with massive, secure bike parking underground. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Bike-friendly (the hotel has Accueil Velo status and also has its own fleet of hire bikes). Free wifi (though coverage was patchy when we were there). Great showers. Onsite restaurant for evening meals. Super cyclists' breakfasts. No air-con but fans in every room. Courtyard garden. Within walking distance of all major attractions; short bike ride from the train station. French and English spoken.

Quirky B&B cabins in the heart of Le Mans

These are fun! Les Cabanes de Do are located in the heart of Le Mans near the river Sarthe. They offer a unique twist on the B&B concept. Each cabin has its own terrace, plus all the usual mod-cons (kettle, TV, little fridge and a fan). Each has an en suite bathroom with shower. Breakfast is delivered daily to your door in a basket. All cabins are doubles or twins. They are accueil velo accredited, so bikes are a common sight here. Free wifi. French and English spoken.

Le Mans - Première Classe Le Mans Centre Palais des Congrès

Ultra budget option close to the city centre

Make no mistake: this is an budget option. I paid €39 for a room, though this can be as cheap as €29 depending on the night of the week and the season. And you get what you pay for: a bed, a bedside table, a clean but dated shower / toilet room. But, quite frankly, that was all I needed. I'd just ridden the Le Mans 24-hour Sportive and this was perfect. All I wanted to do was sleep and this fitted the bill perfectly. The lady on reception didn't look twice when, smelling and not having slept or showered in almost 36 hours, I wheeled my bike into reception. Fully laden with panniers and a tent that I was consciously refusing to use again that night, the bike fitted nicely in the elevator and I took it up to my room and parked it against the wall. I then collapsed for 12 hours of slumber in my super basic 6th floor room. For €39, it was something akin to heaven. Breakfast not included.

Affordable cycling accommodation 50km from Mont St Michel

Good, affordable local accommodation on the the Tour de Manche bike route where it runs concurrent to the EuroVelo 4 through Le Neufbourg in Normandy. Being just 200 metres from the bike route, the hotel sees lots of cyclists. It's just 50km from here to Mont St Michel, making this a good last-night layover before visiting the Mont (or a good first stop en route to Caen or Cherbourg). Inhouse restaurant. Doubles, twins and family rooms. French and English spoken (it's run by an English couple). Free wifi. Kettle in room for teas and coffees.

Many rooms have views of the surrounding mountains. Buffet breakfast available daily. A short ride to the Le Puy-en-Velay train station. Management advises there is a lockable bike store.
