We stayed at the bike-friendly Le Relais du Commerce on the final stretch of our La Velo Francette ride. In the heart of Suisse Normande, this is arguably one of the prettiest stretches of the ride. The hotel itself is pretty basic, but it's good value and clean. There's a dedicated bike shed at the rear of the hotel, and a restaurant onsite serving local fare; the food was OK but we'd probably try a local eatery next time. Rooms at the front of the hotel open up on to the balcony which overlooks the town (the balcony is ideal for airing wet and smelly cycling kit too). Free wifi. Double and triple rooms, all with en suites.

A three-star campsite, Camping Croque Loisirs is clean, with hot showers and a good friendly service (speaking French, English, Dutch and German). The Le Pavillon Bleu Hotel Restaurant is a basic, budget hotel recommended to us by readers on the Atlantic Coast bike route. Saint-Dié-des-Vosges
Vosges, Lorraine
Price from: €58
Open: All year
Roughly equidistant from Strasbourg (96km) and Nancy (84km), Saint Die des Vosges is also a handy 60km from Colmar, with the ride taking you through the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional des Ballons des Vosges. The hotel itself is in the centre of Saint Die des Vosges on the banks of the river Meurthe. It's 3-star with free wifi, and an onsite restaurant and bar. There's a small luggage store for bikes and kit, plus management advises bikes can be kept in rooms where space permits. This area is a haven for mountain bikers, but there are also plenty of wonderful (and relatively traffic-free) road routes to explore at your leisure. This is one of France's lesser travelled areas (but for how much longer?)
