Friendly riverside hotel with quality in-house restaurant

Situated near the banks of the river Loir, this hotel has a large garden and good bike storage. There is also a very good restaurant in the hotel for dinner. There were only a few guests when we stayed so the menu was limited menu, but is was just fine. Cloyes-sur-le-Loir is 60km west of Orleans and 50km north of Blois.

Loire Valley - Camping Les Alicourts

Loire valley camping between Orléans and Bourges

This is a good option if you're wanting to escape the main tourist trail that runs along the Loire river to the north. Camping Les Alicourts is situated on a lake with a wealth of water sports on offer, including cable water-ski. There's a choice of four pools, including a heated covered option, plus lots of things to keep children entertained with dedicated clubs for each age group. For big kids, there's cocktails on the bar terrace and a choice of dining options. The chateaux are still accessible from here, as is the famous wine town of Sancerre to the south. The tourist hotspots of Orleans and Blois are 60-70km from the site, making this an ideal stopover en route or after the busy Loire route.

Cycle-friendly B&B just south of the river Loire at Angers

La Coulee Verte is a small and friendly B&B run by Vanessa, a professional harpist. She's hit all the right notes (sorry!) with La Coulee Verte. It's ideally placed for exploring the vineyard routes of the Loire Valley, and is just a few kilometres from official signposted Loire à Vélo routes as they follow the river south of Angers. Her B&B sleeps 10 people in a combination doubles and triples. The house itself is surrounded by and overlooks vineyards, and there is wine-tasting in the nearby village of St Aubin. Vanessa offers evening meals by arrangement – an excellent option for late arrivals, while the kitchen is also available for guest use. This is a well-designed and maintained hotel with cool rooms between Bordeaux and Toulouse, not far from the Canal de Garonne route. It is surrounded by gardens and has a nice pool area to relax in. This hotel is also used by local cycle touring companies, so they are well used to accommodating cyclists and safely storing their equipment.

Marseillan Plage - Camping Robinson

Camping Robinson at Marseillan Plage is ideal for the start/end of Canal du Midi bike rides, being 7km from Agde and a 16km ride along the Mediterranean coast to/from Sete. The campsite – which has been a fixture on the south coast for more than 30 years – offers direct access to the beach at Marseillan Plage, but there's also a onsite swimming pool and waterpark. Set across 2.5 hectares, it's a peaceful and green site. Tent pitches plus mobile homes and cabins for rent. Some cabins face straight onto the beach and would be wonderful for a fixed base stay for a few days. There are also 'modulo'camp' pitches or wooden huts for cyclists. You pitch your tent near these and get added benefits of a fridge, coffee machine, picnic table and electricity.

We stayed at Hotel La Marjolaine on our La Velo Francette bike ride (see here for our Angers to Mayenne report). Hotel La Marjolaine really is an excellent base for cycling. The hotel has its own fleet of bikes (see photo above) in a massive bike storage room (plenty of room for repairs and maintenance). The restaurant is excellent, serving fine local cuisine, and the breakfasts are fit for any cyclist. The hotel has lovely gardens, and rooms either overlook these or the Mayenne River itself. This is a super place from which to explore the wonderful Mayenne River bike path south towards Laval (and the Loire) or north towards Domfront. French and English spoken. Free wifi.

Cosy accommodation near the Cevennes National Park

Mende is a great base for cycling. It's something of an off-the-beaten track destination, slightly less so recently thanks to a few appearances on the Tour de France route. It makes a great destination for cycling due to is its proximity on the edge of the wonderful Cévennes National Park. There are lots of MTB routes here, along with quiet road routes through beautiful gorges. Hotel de France is based in the centre of town and has a lovely terrace for dining.

Metz boasts some wonderful architecture with the Gothic Saint-Stephen Cathedral having the largest expanse of stained-glass windows in the world. La Mimona B&B is perfectly situated for anyone wanting to enjoy the Atlantic Coast La Vélodyssée cycle route as it passes through the south west, with the signposted path passing just 50m away. The B&B is just outside of Mimizan, with the town centre and the lake, which come alive in the holiday season, a further 7km to the south. This is a great one-night stopover or a good base for a longer holiday stay. A pool is available for guests plus the owners provide house bikes for guest use, so you can explore this flat area even if you don't arrive under your own steam. This hotel has been recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here (there is a dedicated bike shed). L'Armateur is an 18th-century house that's been converted into a modern and stylish hotel. It's in the centre of Moissac, just 50m from the Canal de Garonne bike route. The rooms at the Hotel l'Armateur have views over the garden or the town. Free wifi plus the rooms have kettles for tea and coffee – something of a rarity in French hotels. The common areas in the hotel are air-conditioned and there is a swimming pool in the garden. The restaurant serves traditional and regional cuisine (you can also eat on the terrace).

Under 2km from the beach and with its own pool, the Pierre & Vacances apart-hotel at Moliets et Maa is a nice option for combining a cycle with a beach holiday. Hotel Le Beauvoir is perhaps better known (and regarded) locally for its restaurant than its accommodation, however it does offer basic rooms for an affordable price (often in combination with meal deals). When I visited to eat, the lovely lady managing the restaurant told me that the hotel has a lockable garage for bikes and that it often welcomes cyclists who are passing through en route to Mont St Michel. There's camping and then there's camping à la française. This site is super-conveniently located, about a 20-minute bike ride from the cycle/walking path to Mont-Saint-Michel. It’s spotlessly clean, has all the mod cons you'd need, and is right in the high street of Beauvoir, if you want to stock up on snacks and essentials. You name it, they've got it: bar, snack bar, shop selling bread, pastries and sundries, outdoor ping-pong tables, mini golf, trampoline, video games, boules, pinball, board games, bicycle hire, washing machines, wifi (paid-for), tumble dryers, BBQ rental and ticket sales for Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey. You never, ever have to leave. Okay, maybe to go and see Mont-Saint-Michel. It also got accueil vélo status, so they tick all the bike boxes.
