Soulac-sur-Mer is locataed at the northern tip of the Medoc peninsula, near where the ferry crosses to Royan. If you're on an Atlantic Coast biking trip, or simply exploring the vines of the Medoc, there's a good chance you'll be passing by here. Choose whichever accommodation suits you and your group – B&B or self-catering apartments or, for larger groups, the rental of an entire house. On the Atlantic Coast La Velodyssee path, you're right on sandy beaches and in the centre of town. In Soulac itself there's a bike shop with hire (bikes plus trailers) for all ages. Local cycle trips can be arranged through Margaret, plus she has maps and other advice to hand. Free wifi.

These are not your average mobile home chalets. They are set in the grounds of an 18th century chateau which is also home to a modern and well-equipped campsite. There are 2 or 3-bedroom chalets and each is supplied with bedding and towels along with nice touches like olive oil, balsamic vinegar, hand lotion, and the all important tea and coffee supplies. The park itself has indoor and outdoor pools, plus a fishing lake, bar, restaurant and takeaway. There's a wide range of activities such as yoga, cooking and playgroups for kids – so plenty to do for the whole family when you're not on your bikes. The Vendèe region's beaches are just a 13km ride away - the perfect daytrip. Peyloubère is a lovely 35-acre estate 6km south of Auch (and 80km west of Toulouse) with flexible accommodation for groups as well as solo cyclists. This is beautiful, relatively undiscovered cycling country with a network of small roads and well-maintained cycling tracks (see here for more about cycling in the Gers). Auch is on the Arles to St Jacques de Compostelle route, while the Pyrenees are also within reach. Theresa, who is super keen to welcome more cyclists, offers B&B as well as 5 self-catering cottages for between 2 and 8 people. There is a spa with jacuzzi and sauna for tired muscles, plus a pool, gardens and meadows to relax in and explore. Bike hire is available locally and can be delivered to you, while there is a Decathlon store in Auch for repairs and spares. Family friendly. Free wifi. English and French spoken.

Auch is built around the west bank of the Gers river, and is the capital of the Gers region – France's most sparsely populated. The area makes either a wonderful base for cycling, or an interesting stop en route to the mountains of the Pyrenees or to Toulouse to the east. Hotel de France – in the middle or town – is a former coaching inn that's retained much of the elegance and charm of bygone years. Situated in the heart of Cathar country, Confort du Sud is just 50km south of Carcassonne in a small but popular village in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The owners, Ade and Leesa, are keen to see more cyclists enjoy their local area. The house sleeps up to 8 and has everything you need to enjoy a peaceful break in the French countryside. There's a small enclosed rear garden with tables, chairs, loungers and a shade sail offering views of the nearby chateau. The house itself has a fully equipped kitchen along with washing machine, and there is indoor storage area for bikes (complete with security shutter). There are also three bikes that you can borrow to explore the gentle cycling nearby. There's a swimming lake (with lifeguards in summer) plus fishing. This is an ideal base for cycling clubs (and perfect for tackling the Figure of Hate sportive). Also great for families or groups with some cyclists and some non-cyclists. Local cyclist Martyn has five rooms at his tranquil B&B close to excellent road routes and equally special mountain bike circuits. From his door, the Tour de France cols of Plateau de Beille, Port de Pailhères and Col de Porte-Pa are all within reach, but so too are some gentler local rides suited to all abilities. Maison Vayon is an old stone house a short pedal from its neighbouring village. There are 3 double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a new kitchen , dining room and a comfortable sitting room that opens out onto a large terrace and garden, perfect for a post-ride BBQ. Aups is a beautiful medieval village with numerous restaurants and narrow streets. There's also a lively market on Saturdays and Wednesdays. The cycling to be had around Aups is excellent up into the hills to Lac Saint Criox and the stunning Gorges du Verdun, with lots of options for all abilities.
