If you're looking for a cyclist-run base for biking in a lesser-explored area of France, than this could be it. The Marshall family are cyclists who have spent two years creating comfortable and modern self-catered gites nestled in the ancient Foret de La Double halfway betwen Bordeaux and Perigueux. The nearest town is Montpon-Menesterol, which is on 5 designated local cycling circles. It's also on the Lawrence of Arabia bike route and the new Velo-route Voie verte de la Vallee de L'Isle, which goes all the way through to Perigueux. It's a safe car-free route along the river valley. The area also has lots to offer mountain bikers and families. The national park of La Jemaye is 20 minutes away and has beautiful cycling routes around the lake with places to swim and picnic. The gites themselves have modern creature comforts plus a safe storage area for bikes (there's a reliable repair shop in Montpon and hire bikes can be delivered to the door). The gites provide a beautiful-urban-meets rural space for cyclists of all levels. There's even a heated swimming pool for post-ride relaxation.

Chalus – Self-catering Barn in Chalus

Haute Vienne, Limousin (Nouvelle Aquitaine)
Email: [email protected]

Price from: From 3 nights for €200 (please enquire about other prices and lengths of stay)

Open: March to October

Châlus is situated in the department of the Haute-Vienne, a relatively undiscovered area, meaning quiet roads and peaceful trails, including the 180km 'La Route Richard Coeur de Lion' which runs close by and follows Richard the Lionheart's journey as he battled against King Philip of France (Lawrence of Arabia retraced the trail). Nineteen chateaux and ancient monuments make up the route; many of which can be found within the nearby area. The open plan stone barn still has many of its original features and there is a fully equipped dining area and galley kitchen. The first floor has an open plan bedroom and bathroom area, while the main bedroom has a double bed made from the building's reclaimed joists. There is also a beautiful Romeo and Juliet balcony overlooking the terrace and surrounding fields. A wood burner and heated bedrooms also means that this is a great option for spring and autumn when the region is at its most colourful.

This charming Charantaise cottage B&B is on the official Tour de Charente bike route. It's run by Sue and Gordon, who's a cyclist keen to share his local routes with the rest of us. "I can strongly recommend the roads and many paths in the Charente to both road and off-road bikers," he writes. "I would liken the terrain of our part of the Charente to the Cotswolds, though it's still very, very quiet here – when I bike to Ruffec on the main road, it's a leisurely ride taking about an hour, and I might see six or so cars. Taking the dogs for a walk on one of the many paths through the local fields and woods is usually a solitary ramble – we saw one other couple the whole of last week. Our B&B would suit any cyclist, and we have a stone bike shed and stone barn to house bikes as well as to work on them." The 1870s cottage offers comfortable en suite B&B accommodation with lovely timber ceilings and a four-poster bed. Sue and Gordon have local maps that cover the extensive network of country paths and lanes, plus they can help arrange bike hire if you're not bringing your own. Private garden and patio. Free wifi. Hidden away in the quiet countryside about 90km from both Limoges and Poitiers.

Chez Marie Rose is in a super, unspoilt area in the Périgord-Limousin Natural Park 17km from Nontron. The owner Janet is keen to offer her cottage as friendly, affordable accommodation for cyclists. A pleasant 5km rural diversion from the Flow Velo bike route from the Atlantic Coast to Thiviers (and then on to Perigueux), this is an ideal place to take a rest as you cross from the Charente into the Dordogne (or vice versa). This is especially true as bike-friendly accommodation in this area is stil somewhat under-developed. The nearest signposted bike track is at the bottom of garden, linking you in to local tracks and backroad routes. Janet is a local cyclist and has ridden many of the route variations so can advise on what's best for your legs! She also has a healthy collection of IGN maps and local cycle circuit maps to share. There is hardly any motor traffic in this area, and cycling is a real joy. The cottage sleeps three. It's self-catering but you can order welcome meals and/or breakfasts if needed. French and English spoken.

We stayed here on our La Velo Francette ride and it took us about 30 seconds after arrival to regret not bringing our swimmers. After several days on the bike, a relax in the spa would have been a real treat. We made do instead with an Italian shower to ease the muscles followed by a glass of wine in the expansive gardens, chilling out in the afternoon sun and wishing we could stay longer. The hotel is family run and has accueil velo status, so you can request prices for baggage transfers and other bikey services. The house itself is a 19th century manor, with the bedrooms – each unique – housed in the adjoining restored and beautifully decorated stables. It's a unique and really pleasant place to stay.
