Located near the sandy coast and pretty marine town of Douarnenez with its cafe-lined marina and wonderful seafood restaurants, this site is a good base from which to explore this part of coastal Brittany (bike hire is available onsite if you don't have your own wheels). There is already a superb coastal hiking path along this section of the coast and the new Route 5 Littoral-Roscoff-Saint Nazaire is being developed to open it up to bikes. A voie verte already connects Douarnenez to Quimper via a disused railway line. For after your ride, the Woodpecker restaurant and pub provides local food and drinks (including home-made pizzas and local cider). His beautiful 200-year-old old Charentais farmhouse sits amid vineyards and sunflowers near the village of Epargnes. There are three B&B rooms, two with en suites. Adrian will happily share his knowledge of the region, which is rich in cycling routes – the Canal de Deux Mers route from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean starts nearby and the EuroVelo 1 Atlantic Coast route is within reach and always popular. There are also lots of safe local roads that are ideal for riding with a map and some local knowledge (Adrian will even go out with you for a spin if you need a riding partner). Mike's keen to see more cyclists use his 1981 vintage 'glamping' caravan situated in his orchard near Chalabre and Mirepoix – a rural area tucked in the foothills of the Pyrenees but still only 50km south of the Canal du Midi. The caravan has an eco system, solar electricity and a composting loo. When we spoke to Mike, he was also putting in a new sunroof to cover both the caravan and the decking. It makes an interesting self-catered option for riders exploring this 'hidden' part of the south of France, and the views of the lower Pyrenees are a bonus. There is a garage available in the nearby main house for bike storage. (The van can be booked via Mike's main accommodation website).

There are bike routes for all abilities from the door – gentle backroads down to the Canal du Midi and the vineyard routes of the Aude, but also the Black Mountains or the Pic de Nore (1211m) for something more challenging. The village itself dates back to early medieval times and still has a ruined chateau at its heart. More modern treats include a village brocante, restaurants, bolaungerie and a greengorcer selling local cheeses and produce. All told, The Little French Maison is an base from which to experience local French culture while still being within easy reach of all the key tourist hotspots.

Hotel du Cygne in Beauvais is at the crossroads of a number of good cycling routes. Firstly, it's on the official London to Paris Avenue Verte bike route. It's also well located if you're cycling south from Calais to Paris, as Richard Peace did here. It's a reasonably priced, accueil velo hotel with spacious bike storage (though it's on the first floor, the owner will help you if required). There's a full buffet breakfast available each morning and there are also plenty of shops and restaurants nearby if you prefer to pop out. Free wifi.
