The day Sue at La Boudonniere got in touch with us, she'd just arrived home after cycling from St Malo via Pontorson (gateway to Mont St Michel) on lovely quiet country roads. She's keen for the rest of us to enjoy her quiet roads and offroad tracks too. Her two self-catering cottages offer a great base for combining a relaxing holiday with some cycling. There are dedicated cycle routes to Mont St Michel and the surrounding bay, as well as to Dinan and St Malo, and the beautiful beach and bays areas of the coast. Add to that glorious countryside and pretty medieval towns and villages, such as Combourg and its magnificent chateau, and it's an ideal cycling spot. There's also the Foret de Villecartier on the doorstep – a haven for cyclists. There are two gites – sleeping 4 and 7 – and they're available on a bike-friendly nightly basis. They're set on tranquil grounds with a swimming pool, BBQ and play areas, extensive lawned gardens, a lake and a private woodland. You can also start your stay by rummaging through Sue's welcome pack! Free wifi. French and English spoken.

The Marshall family are cyclists who have spent two years creating comfortable and modern self-catered gites nestled in the ancient Foret de La Double halfway betwen Bordeaux and Perigueux. The nearest town is Montpon-Menesterol, which is on 5 designated local cycling circles. It's also on the Lawrence of Arabia bike route and the new Velo-route Voie verte de la Vallee de L'Isle, which goes all the way through to Perigueux. Chalus – Self-catering Barn in Chalus

Renovated barn from which to discover the cycling secrets of Limousin

Ballengeas
87230 Châlus
Haute Vienne, Limousin (Nouvelle Aquitaine)

Price from: From 3 nights for €200 (please enquire about other prices and lengths of stay)

Open: March to October

View map

Châlus is situated in the department of the Haute-Vienne, a relatively undiscovered area, meaning quiet roads and peaceful trails, including the 180km 'La Route Richard Coeur de Lion' which runs close by and follows Richard the Lionheart's journey as he battled against King Philip of France (Lawrence of Arabia retraced the trail). Nineteen chateaux and ancient monuments make up the route; many of which can be found within the nearby area. The open plan stone barn still has many of its original features and there is a fully equipped dining area and galley kitchen. The first floor has an open plan bedroom and bathroom area, while the main bedroom has a double bed made from the building's reclaimed joists. There is also a beautiful Romeo and Juliet balcony overlooking the terrace and surrounding fields. A wood burner and heated bedrooms also means that this is a great option for spring and autumn when the region is at its most colourful.

Chez Marie Rose is in a super, unspoilt area in the Périgord-Limousin Natural Park 17km from Nontron. The owner Janet is keen to offer her cottage as friendly, affordable accommodation for cyclists. A pleasant 5km rural diversion from the Flow Velo bike route from the Atlantic Coast to Thiviers (and then on to Perigueux), this is an ideal place to take a rest as you cross from the Charente into the Dordogne (or vice versa). This is especially true as bike-friendly accommodation in this area is stil somewhat under-developed. The nearest signposted bike track is at the bottom of garden, linking you in to local tracks and backroad routes. Janet is a local cyclist and has ridden many of the route variations so can advise on what's best for your legs! She also has a healthy collection of IGN maps and local cycle circuit maps to share. There is hardly any motor traffic in this area, and cycling is a real joy. The cottage sleeps three. It's self-catering but you can order welcome meals and/or breakfasts if needed. French and English spoken.

Les Gîtes de Fontenioux sit just west of the Vélo Francette bike route, and they also offer many other picturesque, local routes that can include leisurely lunch stops. (There's also a restaurant in the village plus another in a neighbouring village). Barbara and Trevor are keen to see more cyclists and will be happy pointing you in all the right directions (including towards the excellent local boulangerie!) The two self-catering gites, called Violette and Marguerite, have been lovingly converted from old workers' houses that retain their charm while also offering all the mod-cons. There's a heated swimming pool over the warmer months and landscaped gardens to relax in too. Although set in the countryside, there are lots of interesting towns within reach, including L’Absie and Secondigny, both with shops, bars, and restaurants. Historic Parthenay is just 24km to the east, while Niort and Fontenay-le-Comte are to the south and south-east respectively – all with traditional outdoor markets. Free wifi.

If you're seeking a relaxing retreat after a busy day's cycling, then Les Cerisiers is ideal. It was originally the maison gardienne or 'guardian's cottage' for the neighbouring villa. Completely separate from the villa, the cottage is private, peaceful and perfect for two. Recently renovated, it’s been stylishly updated with modern fittings and facilities, and is only a short cycle into Monpazier – a famous Dordogne village that's on the list of 'Most Beautiful Villages of France'. The cottage is ideal for exploring chateaux, prehistoric caves, hilltop villages and vineyards. French doors open onto your private stone terrace for al fresco dining, while a woodburning fireplace will keep you cosy in cooler months. Bike hire is available locally. If you don’t have a car, just catch a train from Bordeaux or Bergerac to Le Buisson-de-Cadouin or Siorac-en-Perigord and take a short taxi ride (or bike ride) to Monpazier. Bike hire can be arranged locally if you don't have your own wheels. Lots of local services, including boulangeries, pharmacy, ATM, a market on Thursday, plus supermarkets. There’s also a great Saturday market at Villereal – just a bike ride away. Free wifi. French and English spoken.
