Ride from one historic port town to another: the wonderfully walled St-Malo in Brittany to the boats of La Rochelle, via salt marshes, fields of peat bog and the water world that is the Marais  Poitevin – some of the French coast's most magnificent scenery. Tents, luggage transfer, bike hire (if you need it), all breakfasts and lunches plus some evening meals included. Champagne – the name conjures images of effervescent golden liquid, sparkling in an elegant flute, toasting a celebration – and also the rolling countryside in France where this fabulous drink is produced. This leisurely self-guided exploration of the Champagne region will reward you with beautiful, charming villages, chalk hillsides covered in pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay vines; and of course the opportunity to meet the families who create the world’s most famous tipple. Champagne also holds some surprises: medieval churches, the Gothic cathedral od Reims, and a lighthouse, hundreds of kilometres from the sea, built as a publicity stunt in 1909. The price of this tour includes 4 nights in charming B&Bs or 3* hotels, daily luggage transfers, a detailed roadbook with tourist information and a map (there is a permanent helpline for any problems), and a guided tour and Champagne tasting sessions at a renowned Champagne house.

We're a bit impartial to this itinerary at FWF because we live on the route; we ride these roads a lot and know what a wonderful area it is for cycling. On this itinerary, you head out of Bordeaux on the Roger Lapebie bike route and into the vines of the Entre deux Mers, its undulating landscape providing stunning views across the valley. You'll loop back up through Rauzan (if you're lucky you'll catch its famous antiques market) before continuing on to the old UNESCO-listed town of St-Emilion for a glass of red among the vines. It's then east to Ste-Foy-la-Grande (try and time your trip to be there on a Saturday morning for the market – voted the best in France). Further east is Bergerac and Montbazillac (beware the hill!), home to some of the region's finest sweet white wines (and at a fraction of the prices of Sauternes). From here it's into the Dordogne proper for pre-history, hill-top villages and more river valleys. Price includes B&B hotel accommodation, travel folder and maps in French or English, luggage transfers, bike hire, and emergency phone support. (If you take this trip, email me at FWF so we can join you for a day stretch).
