Condom
Gers, Midi-Pyrenees (Occitanie)
Price from: €70
Open: All year
You get a lot of bang for your buck at Les Trois Lys – closer to a major city, a hotel like this would twice the price or more. Instead, you'll find yourself nestled in a town surrounded by countryside and within striking distance of the Pyrenees. Condom is around 150km from either Bordeaux and Toulouse, or 100km north of the airport at Tarbes. It's 50km from the Canal de Garonne at Agen (and also linked by local TER train - see bike/train info here). It's a great cycling base – especially as the Voie Verte de l'Armagnac starts near the town. There is no dedicated bike garage but there is a safe storage shelter within the grounds – the hotel regularly welcomes cyclists and walkers on the route to Compostella. It offers an outdoor pool and a bar, free wifi and a 24-hour reception for late arrivals.

Paul and Liz at Les Abeilles Sauvage offer self-catering accommodation in the heart of the Haute-Vienne and Creuse, two hugely under-cycled areas of central/south-western France that are steeped in cycling tradition. This is the area that was home to the French TDF icon Raymond 'Pou-Pou' Poulidor – he lived and cycled here his whole life, and a nearby lake-side route now bears his name. There are clusters of cycle routes from the door of Les Abeilles Sauvage, and Nedde – a designated cyclotourisme “velo tout terrain” (MTB) area, is just 3km away. The accommodation is a two storey, stone farmhouse that's been converted into a 'bunkhouse'-style acccommodation that's perfect for cycling clubs, groups and families. Fully equipped kitchen and dining room, lounge and TV. Large four-bed room on the first floor with shower room. On the second floor there is a separate double bedroom with an ensuite shower room with WC and washbasin. The terrace is ideal for outdoor meals and BBQs. It's hard now to imagine the Normandy coast in World War II. The beaches here are peaceful now, the fields full of farm produce and animals. Exporing the D-Day beaches by bike brings the juxtoposition of this serenity and the brutal history of the area into sharper focus. The Old Farm of Amfreville in Cauquigny is just 4km from Sainte-Mère-Église, central to the D-Day airborne invasion and where paratrooper John Steele was caught on the church spire (as depicted on The Longest Day). It was here, too, that Band of Brothers was based, bringing the landings to life in all their horror. But history is brought even closer to home when you stay at the Old Farm of Amfreville B&B, which was used by the German army throughout the occupation. It was from here that a field post office and communications centre was run. Later, it was used as a German field hospital during the battle of Normandy until its liberation by the 82nd Airborne Division. The present owners, David and Alyson, offer a warm welcome to cyclists. The B&B is ideal for signposted D-Day cycling routes, and is also near the D-Day to Mont St Michel route that takes you to the area's other high-profile attraction. Explore the Tour de Manche or cycle on to Paris. The Old Farm of Amfreville B&B sleeps upto 6 people. Secure, lockable storage area, plus stacks of local knowledge from David and Alyson.

This clean and friendly chain hotel comes recommended to us by cyclists who rode the Canal de Garonne bike route between Bordeaux and Toulouse. It is also close to where the Garonne River meets the Lot River (and its bike route) at Aiguillon (hence the 'confluence' in the title). The hotel is registered as an accueil velo place to stay and regularly sees cyclists through. Modern and friendly, it has crisp and interesting interior design that sets it apart from regular chain hotels. This is a good option if you're looking for a clean and reliable base for a night. Modern hotel that's been recommended to us by cyclists
This really is a nice place to stay (checkout that bathroom above!) It was recommended to us by cyclists who stayed here at the end of their Burgundy cycling holiday. This is a private house that's been converted into a small, modern hotel that's very welcoming to cyclists. When I contacted the management, they said they could store some bikes in the hotel; if they have groups in, they use a locked room in a secure public parking complex near the hotel. They also provide maps ("with pleasure!" they said) and can help with bike hire. The onsite restaurant is also a treat with Michelin stars and a wine list with a who's who of local winemakers. Free wifi. Spa and wellness centre (free for guest use with hamman).

It's always a good sign when a B&B owner emails to provide some small snippet of information about a local bike route. That's how I found out that Jacie was the sort of owner we all needed to know more about. Her Numéro CINQ B&B is at the crossroads of two major national bike routes: Veloscenie Paris to Mont St Michel and the splendid Velo Francette from Caen to La Rochelle. And that's not even the best bit. Jacie's B&B is wonderfully set up for cyclists: dusters and rags are available to clean down baggage and bikes, hot or cold drinks are offered on arrival, and there's an SOS collection service offered within 20km for punctured or broken down bikers (Jacie's hubby permitting!) The B&B is just a two-minute walk from the Medieval Domfront town centre and its bars and restaurants (Jacie can make recommendations and reservations if needed). English and French spoken. For anyone wanting a break from long-distance riding, there's lots of beautiful local cycling on offer if you fancy a fixed base for a few days (think small local roads, farmland, and apple and pear orchards). For those with a car, it's a 40-minute drive from Mayenne or half an hour into the Suisse-Normandie for hillier rides. Bookings via the link below or by direct email/phone.

Peyrail B&B is a charming 19th century farmhouse in a picturesque and quiet corner of the Dordogne River Valley, east of Bordeaux. It's run by artist Jo. This area is perfect for cycling – mostly empty roads with a choice of undulating routes through the vineyards or flatter routes along the river valley (Freewheeling France lives not far away and cycles these roads regularly). Les Leves-et-Thoumeyragues is a small village within reach of both Bergerac and Bordeaux airports (plus the train line linking Bordeaux to the Sarlat/eastern Dordogne area). Within a 60km radius are Bergerac, Eymet, Monpazier, Beynac and, of course, the great wines of Saint-Émilion. The nearest 'big' town is the medieval bastide of Ste Foy La Grande, which has a wonderful Saturday morning market that had been voted the best market in France. Peyrail B&B is a short and worthy detour for anyone cycling the Dordogne River route from Bordeaux to Sarlat via Bergerac.

Pretty riverside hotel on the Veloscenic Paris to Mont St-Michel bike route
An unexpected gem of a hotel in Ducey. The historic stone mill's been cleverly and very tastefully converted into a modern boutique hotel, prettily located on the banks of the river Selune (famed for its salmon fishing). Bikes are locked safely behind a locked gate, though the area's not undercover. There's a laundry service for wet or smelly bike kit, plus wifi. An outstanding breakfast is available to fuel your day – varied and generous and just what every cyclist needs (there are even extras like bacon and French pancakes).
We stayed here when we cycled Paris to Mont St Michel – read our full review of here.
