A wonderfully luxurious reward after a day on the bike. Despite its plush 5-star set-up, Hotel Crillon le Brave is a relaxed and informal refuge where you can enjoy all of the simple pleasures of Provence. It's perched on top of a tiny hill in a village surrounded by vineyards and olive groves (the views from the rooms, terraces and gardens are stunning). It's an excellent base for an assault on Ventoux (it faces the might mont, so you'll be able to see what you're up against), or for gentler bimbles through the vines or lavender fields of Provence. There are 36 beautifully decorated rooms in the hotel, plus there's a self-catering village house ideal for two couples/four cyclists travelling together. Hotel staff can provide maps and route advice (easy loops through neighbouring villages and the vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Ventoux, plus more challenging rides along the Gorge de la Nesque). Cheerful B&B close to restaurants and en route to the D-Day beaches
1 Rue Saint-Clair
50310
Saint-Floxel, Montebourg
Manche, Normandy
Price from: €57 per double room
Open: All year
I stayed here while cycling in Normandy and found it both affordable and cheerful. The owner Patricia is a delight, cheerful and very welcoming (anyone who asks if you'd like a hot chocolate for breakfast before she even shows you to your room wins points with me). The rooms are big, bright and colourful with eclectic wallpaper and comfortable beds. The bathrooms are less impressive and a little bit dated, but there are hot towel racks and radiators for drying cycling clothes and, as a one-night stop close to town, this place is great. One room also has a fridge and microwave; it's also on the road – it's not noisy by city standards but the other two rooms are at the back and quieter, one with garden views. You do need to be aware that you need to arrive after 5pm unless you've let Patricia know in advance (you can do this when you book online); if you arrive early, you can get a key from a neighbour. We've stayed here – read our review.

We stayed at the Hotel L'Abreuvoir and were very impressed. It's around 3.5km to the Nantes-Brest Canal, which is on La Vélodyssée, the Euro Velo 1 bike route. Reception has a map of the safest route linking the hotel to the canal to ensure you avoid main roads (email or phone ahead if you need a copy emailed to you). There are also two 'house' bikes available for guest hire if you are travelling by car and stopping off from the main Rennes-Nantes autoroute and fancy a pootle along the canal during an overnight stay. The hotel is part of the Logis chain of independently owned and run hotels. Its restaurant is excellent, with menus based on local produce (and fresh eggs from the chickens poking around the car park). Even the children's meal was gourmet standard – our two kids (8 and 11 at the time) enjoyed a proper steak cuts with chips and salad – there wasn't a steak hache or chicken nugget in sight. Pool for summer. Lockable garage + tools and a washdown area for bikes. Well sign-posted. This is an eco-friendly hotel – there are even three electric car charging points for guest use.

Look no further for a hotel in Narbonne - we've tested this one for you
This is a super, super place to stay. Hilde and Heather stayed here when they rode the Canal du Midi. This hotel is in the heart of Narbonne, which is on the Canal de la Robine, an offshoot of the Midi. And the girls could not rave more about it. The staff were lovely, there was a great cyclists' breakfast, and the hotel itself is well-located and within walking distance of Narbonne's key attractions. The hotel has retained the charm of a grand family home, and despite its modern touches, its pictures, lamps, and furniture are all in keeping with the original 19th century character of the building. Luggage store. Free wifi. French, English and Spanish spoken.

Basic but friendly hotel on the Meuse River bike route
67 rue de France
88300
Neufchâteau
Vosges, Lorraine (Grand Est)
Price from: €62
Open: All year
We stayed at Le Rialto while riding the EuroVelo 19 Meuse Cycle Route. The hotel is basic but friendly and right on the river. The hotel offers a picnic menu for your panniers. Bar and restaurant on site, with tables inside and out, meaning you need travel no further for your post-ride recovery drink or your supper.

Quirky bike-friendly hotel in the centre of Nevers
This hotel wears its heart on its Twitter account, proudly exclaiming that it welcomes cyclists (and cats). It's a good spot, too, in the middle of Nevers, near the Parc Roger Salengro and a short bimble from the Loire, the cathedral, the train station and other sites in the city. The breakfast is made for cycling: cakes, homemade jams, fresh juice and – yes! – eggs. Half-board accommodation options available with evening meals, or settle for just B&B. Free wifi + an iPad for guest use. You can also use the house bikes if you don't have your own.

This hotel in the Grand Corniche of Nice was recommended to us by a fellow cyclist. The rooms are beautifully turned out and there are specatular views from rooms and panoramic restaurant. It's a two-star hotel with 11 rooms and – unusually in this part of the Cote d'Azur – the spectacular views from here are actually affordable. The owners, Valerie and Gino, tell us there is a garage for storing more than four bikes. If you're in a group of fewer than 4, the bikes can be stored safely on the private terraces.
