The Willow Tree is a cyclist-run two bedroom apartment for 4 people just east of Avignon. It’s an ideal base, being a short ride from the leisure cycling routes of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and also within reach of Ventoux. The apartment sits within the grounds of a larger villa, called The Apple Orchard, but it is fully self-contained. It opens on to a terrace and there is also a heated swimming pool. The owners, Audrey and Peter, live on site and both work for local cycling companies. They can arrange bike hire, biking fittings and maintenance for you, plus advise on the best local routes. Free wifi. English and French spoken.

Situated in the town of Ax-les-Thermes Le Chalet is a good hotel option with clean rooms, a friendly welcome and super restaurant to ensure that you are properly refuelled after a day on the road. The hotel also has its own spa and comes recommended as cycle friendly, with secure space for bikes (it's used by local cycle tour companies). It would make a good base if you are in the area for climbing the Ax-3-Domaines or Plateau de Beille, or watching the Tour de France which regularly pass through. Free wifi. La Residence du Chateau de Jouarres is set in the former grounds of an 18th century chateau adjacent to the Canal du Midi and vineyards in the Minervois/Corbieres wine region of Languedoc, about 20 miles east of Carcassonne. They offer self-catering apartments for 2 to 8 people, with terraces and balconies overlooking the pool area, woodland or gardens. Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchenette.  Breakfast can also be arranged on request. They have secure bike storage, laundry facilities, outside pool, BBQ area, free wifi in communal areas, plus the benefit of an English-speaking manager. Restaurants and local shops/supermarket are around a mile away in the pretty canal side village of Homps, with larger supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and weekly markets in the nearby small towns of La Redorte, Azille and Olonzac. This is an ideal base for a Canal du Midi stop.

From their door, the Portillon, Peyresourde, Ares and the Port de Bales are all within reach. Close to the Bagnères-de-Luchon town centre. All rooms en-suite. B&B plus evening meals included in prices. "We're passionate about providing well-balanced, home-made meals, using as many locally sourced, seasonal ingredients as we can," says Victoria. Le Sapin Fleuri is a 3-star hotel-restaurant run by Olivier Toucouère, a third-generation French hotelier. It's located in the small village of Bourg d’Oueil, at the foot of Tour de France pass Port de Bales and 15km from cycling hotspot Bagneres-de-Luchon. The hotel overlooks the beautiful Oueil Valley, whose views and wildlife can be enjoyed from the gastronomic restaurant that serves traditional local cuisine. As well as delicious food, Olivier serves up everything a cyclist might need: a secure garage for storage, a wash area, a room for drying clothes, and guide notes and maps for mountain bike and road routes from the hotel door. Olivier even has a partnership with a local bike shop so guests have a go-to point for mechanical problems. There's also free wifi.

This is a truly lovely six-bedroom, high-quality catered chalet/guest-house in the mountain village of Bareges – it's run by cyclists for cyclists. Rob and Emma's chalet has a spacious guest lounge, sauna, communal dining room and sunny patio garden with mountain views. All en-suite bedrooms and delicious food. Situated on the climb to the Col du Tourmalet, just 8km from the summit, and centrally located for many other famous Tour de France ascents of the Pyrenees, including the Ardiden, Hautacam, Aspin, Soulor and Aubisque. Located on a hill overlooking Bastia's Old Port and harbour, the Best Western Bastia Centre is a comfortable three-star option located a few hundred metres from the train station. It has excellent provisions for cyclists, including a dedicated bike shed, washdown area with sponges and cloths available, drying areas for clothes, a wholesome breakfast buffet and lots of local cycling advice and maps available from the staff.   24-hour reception, 24-hour bar, terrace. All rooms are air-conditioned and can sleep from one person through to groups of 4. Free wifi throughout the hotel. Good-sized luggage store. Just outside of Bastia, Hotel Cyrnea offers affordable accommodation that looks out over the water (there's also access to a small beach and a garden). This hotel was recommended to us by a cyclist, who described it as excellent value for money. He also said the staff were extremely friendly. Doubles and triples. Free wifi. Ideal for ferry port access. No restaurant but within walking distance of one. Management advises bikes can be safely stored.

As you can tell from the picture, Hotel des Gouverneurs commands majestic views across Bastia harbour. The views are even more stunning by night when the lights are twinkling over the water. The hotel is used to welcoming cycling groups and has an indoor pool for your tired muscles after a day on the bike (there's also a sauna and hammam for guest use for a surcharge). The hotel itself is in a pedestrianised part of town, though car parking is available for nearby (email the hotel to reserve it after you've made your room booking). Onsite bar. Rooms also feature that all important kettle for teas/coffee (not always standard at French hotels). Free wifi. Choose from a buffet breakfast, or go continental. 24-hour reception for late arrivals.
